well at work rumors have been running around. about work to replace the 48re when it is retired. I have heard as soon as summer 04,they will be replacing the line that built the old small case (904 derivative) and putting in the new H-D line. now obviously I have no proof or I would get pics for all. but I am being told the new unit will be a 6 spd auto. :D yes I will get proof when it become available. I hope it is not rumors. I can tell you this they have converted a room to be used for the designing of the new trans, what it will be is yet to be seen. cross your fingers.

I could believe that a new transmission is in the works. Its not like they spent a lot of time/money designing the 48RE, they just beefed up the 47RE probably so they could release the new motor (600). I would love to see a 5 or 6 speed auto that destroys the allison/torq-shift.

Sweet. A 6 speed HD auto and a full crew cab would be very tempting to me. It would have to be to consider trading in my 1 year old 2003!

But I am a little perplexed at them just now making a room to design this transmission, and then somehow having it ready by this summer? Doesn't seem likely. Maybe it's already designed?

And on reflexion, why would they create a special room for the design process? Don't they have this big design complexes already?

my guess is your correct on the fact it is designed. I really meant that the room was for the team of engineers to collaborate. work out the problems that may arrise.

food for thought:

the new 300C and magnum sedans from dodge have 100% mercedes electronic auto-5speed - right from under a c-class sedan...

So is it very likely that the 48re could be removed for a more favorable in-house built 5-spd auto from mother MERCEDES??

I think yes!

Just give me a 6 speed automated manual (no TC), two over-drive ratios, manual shift override when desired (with paddle shifters on the steering wheel ala F1), and able to handle 1200 ft/lbs of torque. Course, they need to keep the cost of this option under $1K. Is that too much to ask? :)

are you sure its built by mercedes? after all my uaw local covers 3 plants here locally and one of them is ITP II and it builds the 5 spd. auto for this market. now food for thought the new trans will not be in production trucks till 06,that is confirmed, but as everything at d-c subject to change.

The 300c and Dodge Magnum R/T will have a 5 speed MB auto from the E class. These models are the ones with hemis, others will have current DC autos.

but are you refering to the mb designed trans that is built here locally by my fellow uaw workers?the ITP II plant is not up to capacity and I am sure it builds the units your refering to,mb design but built by us.

According to both Car and Driver and Road & Track, the 300-C and the Magnum are built on the previous generation's E-class chassis. They are supposedly (after the Crossfire) some of the first products to take full advantage of the DaimlerChrysler integration.

A Unimog I saw has 24 speeds forward and back. Manual transmission.

I'm surprised I haven't heard of anyone rock crawling with one yet.

Sure would be sweet if the new transmission was like the wifes auto/stick in her PT Cruiser. The neatest auto I have seen being able to select manual mode for up and down shifts that hold the gear you want.

Do you guys remember that article awhile back that had the 2nd gen. dually. They had it over in Germany. It had a Mercedes engine and a Mercedes 6spd. auto. transmission in it. Maybe that is the trans. they are going to use. I can't remember what issue it was in.

Didnt someone run into an older farmer that was being used to test a 6 speed mercedes auto behind the cummins? I remember someone posting this over a year ago. I thought it was a great idea to put a 6 speed in there.

What's all this desire to have a 6 speed auto? Our engines have so much torque and the torque curve is so flat, there is no need for so many speeds, unlike the low torque, high rpm V-8s out there that need to stay wound up all the time. I hate it when automatics shift up and down constantly, and the 6 speed would probably be doing it even more.
