I was going to the store the other day and when I pulled in the parking lot a state trooper pulled in behind me. He told me that my exhaust was illegal and that I had to put the factory exhaust back on becasue it was too loud. I told him I had a muffler and everything that a stock one had on it. He gave me a piece of paper that stated the law. It said something like your exhaust had to meet factory installed specs or something like that. He told me he could take my tags and registration away until I got it fixed if he wanted to. Has anyone else run into this problem? I have passed state troopers all of the time and never had them stop me before this one did. What pisses me off is that these ricers and harley owners can about shatter your window when they go by but they don't say anything to them!!

It sounds to me like he was looking for a reason to pick on you. Did he actually issue you a citation or a "fix it" ticket? If he did, you might try a visit to the county attorney for a clarification of the law.

They stop Harley's also, I have a collection of fix it tickets. The cities normally get me . Boulder is the worst. I have a straight pipe on the truck but have never been stopped in it:p was this on the hwy?

I have to drive through the republic of Boulder everyday. Straight pipe and puffin smoke at will. No problems but I try and behave when mr copper is around. To be honest the first inclination I ever had to bomb my truck came out of a desire to smoke the F out some of them pine cone chuckers in Boulder. You could nuke that town right off the map and Colorado would be no worse for the wear. You will not meet people who are more arrogant, condescending, and pin-headed than the elitists in Boulder. A TDR meet there would be a thing of beauty and great entertainment lol

I'm with Luke!!! I despise the tree huggin, granola crunchin, animal savin, town of Boulder. Let's set up a meeting there and watch them all cringe.

Around here there is a noise ordinance. That says you can't be over a certain decibel level at a certain distance, and that you can't run without a muffler. But I've been next to, cops on bikes, cops downtown, etc... and haven't had a problem. I take it easy in my neighborhood, and around cops, just to avoid any potential problems.

On another note, a friend of mine used to be a Deputy Sherriff, and he said his supervisors always told them that a noise ordinance ticket was a p___y ticket and if they gave one, they had better have another reason for having pulled the guy over... ... Not just the noise ordinance.

I third that, I have to go into Boulder allot, my girlfreind works right off of Pearl street. I have not been stopped in the truck but man do they love pulling me over on the Bike. We sould all meet up at the old mall and make some smoke to cover the smell of the petulie oil they wear:D

I live in Virginia, and no he didn't give me a citation or a fix it ticket. He just told me I have to have the factory exhaust put on it. I say what happened is, he heard my truck to be a little louder than stock, so he probably thought I had it straight piped and was going to give me a ticket, but when he ended up looking and saw I had a muffler, he just came up with an excuse to bother me.

I think most towns have similar laws regarding the alteration of factory exhaust systems. The federal government even states this, it is illegal it remove OR modify the catalytic converter. It is also illegal to remove any of the EPA equipment like air pumps, recirculation systems, etc. The various manufacturers have to meet certain requirements for noise level, particulate matter, carbon monoxide levels, soot and so forth. It only stands to reason that you should not be allowed to alter that. I don't like straight piped anything, I think it is annoying and should be policed. Trucks, motorcycles or cars do not need to be so loud, they serve no purpose but to stroke the ego of their owners and annoy everyone in the immediate area. There is no performance gain, and even the drag strips and circle track across America have noise level limits and require mufflers. I would think that if people need or desire that much attention, that they have to remove their mufflers and drive thru town, they should get a ticket. After all, you did get the attention you so desperately desired, right?

y-knot,

First off, my model year of trucks don't even come with a catalytic converter from the factory. Second, I didn't put on an aftermarket exhaust for a louder noise, I put one on because it helps your truck run cooler with modifications. Doesn't just about everyone else with modifications to their truck have an aftermarket exhaust? I do not dispute that there should be laws against excessive noise and so forth. I just think that there are a lot of other vehicles and motorcycles out there that are a lot louder than I am. Also, what is so wrong with wanting to be different. Should we all just by gray cars and have the exact same wheels and body style of everyone else? By your sig, it looks like you have a few mods to your truck. I would even go to say that a little black smoke might come from your truck. Do you like attention?;)

Hello mr smog patrol man. I would like to report a certain truck owned by a mr y-not which is running around with a big aftermarket slow spooling turbo which is belching tons of soot into the atmosphere that I have to breath... yes you can identify this truck quite easily... it is very quiet... also known locally as the silent lung assassin lol.

Lift saddle... remove bur... life all happy again

Hey y'all are welcome to razz me. I hug trees, love my animals, whole wheat bread & granola . I kinda like patouli oil too. In my own defence , I do own 2 chain saws & a deer rifle. Seriously though, polution is a real problem & we all contribute. Belching clouds of black soot indescriminently on those one takes a notion to look down on only reflects poorly on us all.

I don't know about that... There have been lots of times when kids that are playing in the street move to the side as I drive up in my truck, but not when I drive up in the GF's car..... :D

:{ since we are all coming clean I admit I did follow the Dead and had granola and yogurt for breakfast. But i do love harley's and the smell of diesel in the morning... ... ... ... ... Oo. Oo. Oo.

This is what the law in Virginia states:

§ 46. 2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order.

No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.

The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block.

Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

(Code 1950, § 46-305; 1952, c. 455; 1956, c. 651; 1958, c. 541, § 46. 1-301; 1960, c. 120; 1970, c. 266; 1972, c. 66; 1989, c. 727. )

And yes, we speak to the ricers:D
