98. 5 w/ auto trans. when setting cruise control, after hitting "set" button on steering wheel, the speed starts to climb. It may or may not come back down to the initial set speed. If I hit "set", then "coast" 3 or 4 times it will drop back down, then I can use the cruise buttons to increase/decrease speed normally. After that the speed will remain consistent until cruise is turned off or brake pedal is depressed.

I have heard that Dodge has a TSB out for this symptom and requires a flash update of the ECM, does anyone know if this is correct? have you had it done? what do they normally charge for a flash update? and did it fix your problem?

go to top of the home page ,click on site features, scroll down to 1998 ,click on that and scroll down to vhicle performance. S/B 18-08-99. not sure if this will help.

Your not alone, mine has done it for years. I have replaced all kinds of parts but nothing has corrected it. I am interested in the fix too but the flash is a new one.

Long, long ago I had a 98. 5 24V that did the same thing. Not all the time, just enough so that you to be vigilant.

I think I changed the ABS sensor in the rear axle because it had started to leak gear oil.

A side effect of changing it was the cruise behaved normally afterwards.

I don't know if it was starting to go bad, just not bad enough yet to show up as an erratic speedometer needle.

Thought I would mention it.

Mike. :)
