This is an update to my friends 97 12V dilema. I posted last weekend about his throttle sticking and the engine reving to 2k rpm. Now after setting the governor arm back to the stock location and verifying that the throttle linkage isn't binding. The truck after being reved over 1500 rpm will keep on reving until you turn off the key:eek: He's saw as high a 3500 rpms before turning off the key. After shutting off the key and restarting the truck the truck will run fine as long as you don't run it over 1500 rpms. As soon as you hit over 1500 rpms, you have the runaway diesel condition again until you turn off the key.

Now, for some background info. My buddy installed 3K governor springs and after looking back he thinks he felt something release while turning over the motor in the install process. A "hard spot" was passed when turning over the motor but he's not sure if that's normal or not. We're wondering if maybe something broke inside the pump or maybe a washer or something was left in the pump and he didn't know it. Could the pump be bleeding fuel??? Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. We're desperate!!! :( :{

I did some playing with my GSK and found 1 click (1/4 turn I think) tighter on the spring could change the truck from normal to a high idle and then when reved past 1500 it would not even get back to the idle poiint it was at. never ran away though. Possible mine were 1 or 2 clicks yours may be 4clicks to tight.

That's my suspicion. Maybe lossen each spring 2 clicks and then run it see how that works.

does the truck have cruise,,,,,,, is this happen all the time or just after using the cruise,,,,,,,,,,,, I ran in to a truck that the throlle would stick after using cruise. The crusie would disenage when you tap the brake or cut it off but the truck would stay at 1200 rpm or so untill you cut the truck off,,,,, then it was fine

I'm sure something went wrong during the 3000K install. Did you have the directions and was their any part of the install that was confusing? How many springs did you have left after the install.

Also when turning it over and you felt the release was it like a compression release or something was stuck then it snapped and released? Kurt

Well guys thanks for the suggestions and Kwikkurt you were right. Turns out that my friend left a couple of the washers from the orginal springs :eek: in and then installed the new springs and washers over the old ones. He feels really bad about it and I intend to nudge him about every once awhile just for fun ;)

I just want to thank all of you for your responses and boy what a difference those springs make. My truck is next and I can't wait... :cool: :D

joe, good to see that you got that figured out... hands down, the gsk is the BEST mod for the 12valves. now, what about your clutch, before the gsk?;)

Tom,

I haven't done mine yet but I can't wait because we are going to install them this weekend. After seeing what the difference they made in my buddy's 97 you are definitely right about that being the best mod for the 12V's. His clutch was slipping in every gear when he put it to the floor and I don't think he has much tires left on his duals:eek:. Dually burnouts are sweet!!:cool: I think I'm going to go to a #5 or #6 plate get a southbend, 191 delivery valves, 370's and different turbo and I think I'll be happy after that. Too bad my credit card is overloaded or else I'd be buying this stuff right of way.

So are u still in school or did you go back home??

Joe

i don't think i'll ever be happy with my hp:-laf

yeah, i came home for good last week... that school wasn't for me by any means (i can tell you more in PM's). right now i'm searching for a job.

let's just say that the truck runs waaaaay better at sea level:D (almost no smoke, and no lag). slowed to 60mph with full power yesterday in OD locked, got back on it a little and the transmission slipped like there was butter between the clutches:{

ah well, what can ya do! probably see you at TIM sometime if i ever make it there.

I have that similar problem happen to mine from time to time, though sometimes it is ok, and others it sticks at like 2K. . if you get under and play with the throttle linkage, where it meets up on the 7100, and move it around, it is ok... wierd, but I cannot be without my truck long enough to take it to the dealership.

chris, i don't know that this would be your problem- but if the fuel plate is cocked the wrong way- at a slight angle- it can cause the arm in the pump to bind/hang up now and then.
