I have heard a few stories about pumps getting "stuck" and start accelerating and wont stop. Does anyone know what causes this? A guy in town had this happen to him and couldnt figure out why it happened... . any suggestions?

This can and will occur if the pump is turned up to high. It is possible to turn the pump up and start the truck and everything looks and sounds good, but when you step on the peddle it can take off. Bad situation if you have it in gear. There is no warning.

Turning off the key doesn't always stop the engine from running away as the pressure is so high the shut off solenoid doesn't always close enough. I was told of a runaway recently that happened on a Dura Maxipad that ran away and they couldn't stop it for minutes as they ran for fire extinguisher but the bottle ran out just before the engine stopped. They hit it with a second one and it worked. Won't say the company but lots of people dyno there and they know what they are doing.

BE WARNED.

Yeah John, you might know him. He is some punk kid here in town that thinks he is "all knowing" when it comes to diesels. He was singing a different tune though after he couldnt get his truck to stop accelerating!

There was also a recall on this issue too. Take your VIN # into a DC dealer and get them to run it, from there they can tell you if your particular truck/pump is affected.

My brother's 92 was.

I just came over here for old times sake, I had a 92 before the 2001. My pump ran away but I shut it down using the manual off switch on the fender side of the pump. It then restarted and ran for a while then ran again this happened three times before after I shyut it down manually I could not restart it. A spring had broken and wedged the pump full open, and eventually pieces of the spring disintigrated the inside of the pump. New pump with tow job was right at 2K. I asked the shop supervisor at Cummins what would have happened if I didn't know where to turn it off manually, he said the engine would have started to come appart after it ran wide open for a time. Hope this helps.
