I have a '06 megacab 5. 9 with 108,000 miles. Turbo-back BANKS exhaust and K&N air filter for upgrades. I always run power service with my fuel and have been running a 5 micron baldwin fuel filter since I bought the truck (at 96,000 miles). Recently I have been having white smoke and rough idle sporadically at startup, sometimes last for 30+ seconds and sometimes just a couple seconds. I assumed it was time for new injectors so I had a cylinder contribution test done, all injectors tested within spec. I also had a oil analysis done and everything checked out perfect, no fuel or coolant in oil. I have also replaced the FCA and have not noticed a change. I have not noticed a drop in MPG with these symptoms either. Im kinda lost at this point, thinking maybe a leak in a fuel line? Any advice would be appreciated!

Check the torque on the crossover tubes. Do a search on this forum for complete instructions. If that doesn't help, you prob need injectors.

If you are from an area that is getting colder in the morning, your preheater may not be working.

And a BIG Welcome to TDR!

A contribution test will tell you if an injector has failed, but isn't s good measure of their overall health. What you describe sounds like an air/fuel leak (loss of prime) issue to me. Could be at a crossover tube, or your filter setup, or... . You may also have an injector problem, despite the negative test.

All the contribution test tells you is if the fuel delivery is balanced in the cylinders, not much about the health of a functional injector. To check that will take an injector return flow test and in the long run a test bench with somebody that knows what they are doing.

Do you run additives? Several health doses of Power Service and 2 stroke oil migh help smooth things out. Won't solve a wear problem but if the injectors are just a little sticky it might help.

White smoke is incomplete combustion of the fuel, either from a timing issue, too much fuel in the cylinder at the wrong time, or very cold temps. I think the cold temps are out. It is more likely the injectors are hanging open and dribbling fuel into the cylinder that shows as smoke on start up. You won't see tthat on contribution tests and maybe not even on a return test.

These CR's don't suffer fuel line problems like the jerk pumps. If you have so massive an leak in the fuel ines you would see fuel all over the underside of the truck. Even if the LP is bad any air is bled out in the CP-3. If there is not enough fuel at the CP-3 the truck just won't start.

Have you oiled the k&n filter lately? Too much oil is a bad thing. A mentioned above, consider a traditional paper filter or a reusable like an Amsoil. This engine sucks a whole lot of air and oil on the filter not only gets in the turbo but the intercooler and points beyond. Welcome aboard!

cerb hit it... you need to have a return flow test done in my opinion also... but you should still check your batt connections for the air heater and could check their function with a test light.

First of all, thank you all for your responses! I am new to the forum and I love it, so much great information and great people willing to help!

I do believe my preheater is functioning, I can hear the draw on the batteries before I start the truck and see the changes in volts after a cold startup.

I always run some power service with my fuel, Any advice on what 2 cycle oil to use and how much to add?

After all your input, this is where I am at...

Next I am going to attempt an ohm test on the injectors

Then I want to re torque the crossover tubes

If this all comes back normal then I will look into a return flow test

I have not recently oiled my K&N filter but I have been concerned about the quality of K&N, I will look into a different filter setup to I think...

Thanks!

I have run TCW 3 oil since new, Four to eight ounces per tank of fuel. I use the Walmart branded Super Tech, it's about Ten dollars a gallon. bg.
