Question about RPM's

Good and the Bad

Running out of warranty in December. My question is : If i take the truck back to the dealer one final time are they responsible for correcting all my tsb problems?? I went on Fritz`s web site and alot of those tsb problems I Have. My main concern is the pulling to the left that has gotten worse(especially when I hit the brakes). Since I put new tires on (305 70 16 on stock rims) I called the service manager to see if I brought my truck in the first thing they would blame my problems on is the tires(they love to do that kind of thing) and he said to correct my problem I would have to bring in my original tires and they might have to rebalance them to correct my problems. Also since joining this site I realized my fuel mileage was complete crap(10-12 city w/out any load). I know there is a problem with this but curious how they can check on this for me? problems??? also do you think extended warranty is worth it?? Thanks

I don't think it is nitpicking at all for what we pay for new vehicles. If the TSBs apply (if you are experiencing a particular problem addressed by the TSB) I would not hesitate to take it in and let them correct the problems. I'm assuming this is a 24V. If so, check all the clamps in the pressure system for the air intake. I don't know how your power is but your mileage is terrible. I do 18/19 depending on which city I'm driving in. Savannah has a lot of traffic lights and Warner Robins doesn't and that's the difference for me.

Minor problems can turn into major ones. While you're under warranty you should establish the problems on paper. If they don't fix it or the problem comes back after the warranty expires DC is still under obligation to get it right. Part of the high price of these rigs is the warranty, might as well get your moneys worth.

It may not be that simple. It depends what the dealership writes on the paper. I had my truck in several times for a complaints of difficulty engaging the transfer case. Every time the dealership wrote something to the effect of "unable to verify problem, no problems found, etc". About 8000 miles after the warranty expired the transfer went out. I forced the issue with the dealership and DC's 800 number and got no where. Their opinion was (you guessed it) nothing was wrong with the transfer case when under warranty because the Know-it all Dodge boys said each and everytime I had the truck in there was "no problem" with the transfer case. DC said they might partially pay for repairs if a tear-down (by Dodge of course) indicated the failure was related to my earlier complaints. DC did not seem willing to cover any costs since I was out of warranty and also because of the BS crap that was written on paper from the dealerships, "no problems found, etc".
Oh yea, did I mention that if the tear-down did not show enough prove for DC, I would be responsible for all costs (estimated 1 day labor costs + parts). That along with the fact I felt the dealership was not compitent enough to properly repair the transfer case (due to previous ****ty warranty repair work from this dealership). I decided to go to a transmission shop that specialized in this line of repairs. Upon tear-down the transmission shop found the washer/shim on the rear of the output shaft broke. It was the opinion of the transmission shop that this was most likely the cause of my prior problems. More than likely this would not have been enough evidence to prove my complaint to DC anyway and since the tear-down was done by a non-Dodge shop it was of little use tring to further pursue the issue with DC. I have had no further problems with the transfer case.

Sorry about the long story, but the point is once you are out of warranty and something finally decides to fail, that piece of paper documenting a prior problem may be of no use, depending on what the dealership writes on it as their findings.

Is there a way to have dealerships not write statments on paperwork saying no problems exist when you know otherwise? I would like to know so on my next truck I don't get screwed again!!

If your 98 is a 24 valve a large part of the power/mileage problem may be an emissions re-flash that your dealer may have done, with or without your permission. What it did to my 98 was to take away at least 20% of my power and change my mileage from a solid 20 empty and 16 towing a 25 foot travel trailer, to 15 empty and 11. 5 towing the same trailer. DC will reflash with an updated program, but it did nothing for my truck. From what I have read in the last few months part of what they did was to retard the injector timing. If I had my modifications to do over again, I would try the VA box and either 275 or DD 1 injectors along with an exhaust mod. I am now back to 18-20 mpg empty but still only 12-14 towing. I have not yet done an injection timing change. I want to see what comes out in the next couple months.

I don't mean to be the fly in the ointment but TSBs are not recalls they are only service bullitins related to specific problems. If you don't have the specific problem why would you want to fix it. Furthermore, D/C is under no obligation to offer the fix unless the criteria of the symtoms meet the TSB.

My Dad bought a new 72 gran torino sw. Since the time he brought it home it would hesitate at stop sign/ligtht then jump into gear and take of like a stampede of cattle. Took back to ford dealer several times for this. They found nothing wrong. He had it fixed at a trans place, kept the bill. 5 years later ford recalled that year for trans that would hesitate then take off fast. He brought the recall notice and his bill to ford dealer got his money back. They were amazed he kept the bill that long.
If you have something wrong with the truck and TSB seems to pin point the problem by all means bring it in show it to them. Just don't bring every TSB out for the Dodges in.

Paul is right. The tsb's are tools that DC gives to the tech's to help solve some ongoing problems seen on a few vehicles. If you are still under the factory warranty then you should be able to get the tsb's done on your truck. If you just saw the tsb's and you were not experiencing the complaint then DC has the right not to perform the tsb. When the warranty expires DC does not have to perform the tsb just because someone wants them to even though you may be experiencing the condition. There are some dealers that have to authority to extend the warranty period if they so choose. They are called DSA dealers.
They do have guidelines to follow and it is up to the service manager to make the decision to help or not. Also, they are limited to how many adjustments are made to a vehicle's warranty after it has expired on top of possibly making the owner pay some sort of deductible for the repair. Sorry for the long post. Just my 2 cents worth.

Also not a bad idea is to chat with more than one service manager. If you live in an area that has several dealers around, might find one that wants your business.

Red Nut-- Take the time to have them fix it- I had the same problem on my 99- the didn't believe my till I took the mechanic for a test drive #ad
#ad
he believed me when the pull almost took us into oncomming traffic #ad
they tried to blame break problems but I made them fix that first-- the process should take maybe a week depending on how busy the dc dealer is--- good luck
