Well, I looked in the bed of my truck today--which has NEVER hauled a thing--and I have rust spots all over the place. Mostly clusted in the middle of the bed and beneath my truck box toward the front of the bed.

Is this anything to be worried about? Or is this typical Dodge workmanship and considered normal for a $37,000 truck (let me know that now so I can offload it before more BS like this happens--this is unsat)?

Thank you,

Mike

Dodge gave me a rust and paint warranty for 5year 100k when I bought my new truck. I'm pretty shure its a factory warranty.

Did something get blown in the bed to cause this?

Just wondering - Did something get in the bed to cause the rust? I know I've had metal filings get in mine and later get wet to cause something similar looking.

Sounds like somethiing got in the bed like metal filings or shavings. Fill out your sig. with equipment etc. Is there a hitch in the bed?

Let us know what the dealer tells you. It should be taken care of with warranty if you've never had anything in the bed. Dodge is known for not having the greatest paint in the world, but this sounds more like a defect.

It seems real strange to me, I had my 02 for almost 4 years constantly abusing the bed and never saw a rust spot. The 06 I put a rhino liner in to keep my four wheeler from sliding around, so I guess it will never rust.

It is rail dust. We used to get it on all cars. It shows especially on the white ones. Take it to the dealer and they will use a compund to remove it. It will take them a day or 2 to do it.

Nothing wrong with Dodge or D. C. paint. In FACT saw VERY VERY little warranty on paint and fit and finish. The dealer I was with had a LARGE body shop(like 40 guys and three paint booths etc. The MAJORITY of WARRANTY was from the Ford and nearby G. M. dealers. Very littke D. C. stuff. I also worked a Caddy dealer that sold a FRACTION of the cars the D. C. dealer did and yet we had LOTS of warranty paint and misaligned doors, hoods, deck lids etc. The paint on my 1998 1500 still looks great and has a deep lustre with no more then regular washings and a once a year or so wax/cleaner.

Bingo, guys. Sounds like metal shavings from when the trailer hitch was installed last week!

Will Dodge still cover under warranty? It COULD be rail dust.

Honestly, though, I did not see any shavings in the bed when I picked the truck up. I also swept the bed with a broom before I washed it a few days ago... shouldn't be an shavings in there at all...

What can I get this out with if Dodge won't warranty? Can I go ahead and Linex immediately afterward?

Just take it to the Line-X dealer. They will take the necessary steps to prepare the surface.

I could only hope... I'm a Houston boy in the low-rent part of South Carolina. No idea what kind of job Billy Bob will do.

I'd hate for the rust spots to be Line-X'd over. Rust must be killed before taking the trip to Line-X.

Spray in bed liner with rusty bed

I just got my 06 CTD bed drilled for a removable rail Super 5th wheel hitch and the shop didn't get all the metal shavings out. Overnight the shavings created rust in the white paint. The next day, I brought the truck over to Line-X and asked if this was a problem.

Their answer was that it doesn't matter what the bed looks like as they roughen up the paint surface and use a chemical to clean the paint before they spray the liner in.

This same situation happened to my wife's 04 CTD before I had Armor sprayed in that bed.

No problem to date with either truck.

Go get it sprayed and enjoy the truck. :)

Rail dust appears VERY soon like a few days on a new vehicle and on usually TOP SURFACES ONLY. Its VERY VERY small specs. Thats why the plastic wrapper is put on new vehicles today when they leave the plant as well as for other depris. If its ONLY in the bed and in a pattern and with a NEW HITCH it dosen't take a lot to understand were the rust spots came from. Heck just scrubb it out good.
