My chrome running boards started to rust this past winter, there are streaks and dots (pits?). I was thinking about cleaning them with a fine abrasive pad, like those found in the paint section of a hardware store, and chrome cleaner. What do you suggest?

If the rust isn't too deep, hit it with a metal polish, like White Diamond. Should clean it up. Worked great for that, on the chrome stacks and clamps on the KW. :D

One of the best polishes for chrome/aluminum/brass out there if you can find it is a product called Duragloss. Another good product and sealer is made called X-Treem Polish and their sealer called Metal Majic. X-Treem is the polish end and Metal Majic seals and protects the surfaces after your done.

One major problem which brings on the onslaught of rust to appear on Chrome is using wax. When you wax a chrome surface instead of using a metal polish/sealer it does not allow the chrome to breathe and all the moisture gets trapped in the layer between the chrome and the wax which creates surface rust. As longs as its a metal polish most any will work, but,as with wax products not all are created equal... ... . Andy

This may sound crazy but I have used Crest tooth paste in the past for polishing and cleaning chrome and stainless. It works well.
