What type of rust protection packages are typically offered by the dealer? What's the general opinion on their usefulness?

Rustproofing

When I bought my truck new in '95 I had a local Ziebart dealer spray it. (I think it was around $300) Every year within 30 days (+ or -) you have to pay $40 to have it resprayed. (they respray the stuff that wears off) Last year under my driver door it started to rust. They fixed it 100% no questions asked. ($535) this year I had a spot about my rear wheel and another on my front fender. They fixed both of these. ($1,200) I took it to the bodyshop of my choice and the did the job correctly. This warranty is lifetime for original owner. If I continue to buy new trucks I will always do this. I do not do this thru the dealer... I go straight to the Ziebart person. Just my . 02 worth.

Stay away from the dealer

All the dealers do is send it out to a cheap rust proofing center and have it done. Some actually do it in house, but either way they mark it up HUGE. Around here it is $4-500 at the dealer and $1-200 at rust check, etc. Also the big rust proofing co. stand behind their warranty,as stated above. The dealers usually say they won't fix it until it is "perforated" (ie:hole),and then they say it was "road damage" (ie:stone chip which caused the rust to start),which is not the fault of the rustproofing.

i say forget the factory/dealer rust protection option and go for yearly sprayings from krown or rust check. i use krown and swear by them. my guy over sprays it a lot. it drips for almost a week:D:D if you get it done there within 3 months of ownership and then have it sprayed every year ±30 days [like above] it is lifetime rust protection. and rust, they [company, not franchise] will pay to have it repaired.

oh, and that no-drip stuff is useless imho
