Im driving thru Utah. Stopped at a rest area and I thought the truck sounded different. Besides the normal diesel sound, it had kind of a low rumble. Looked underneath and found that the talk pipe had rusted thru and broken off just behind the muffler.

Darn dodge crap. We dont salt the roads in washington. So I cant blame it on that.

I guess Ill just drive it like that until I get home, and just replace the whole dam exhaust system. #@$%!

Well, since you said "Dodge crap", was that the original muffler ? If it was, 10 years for an exhaust system is pretty good in my book I put an ss MBRP system on mine 6 years ago, it looks no longer nice and shiny, but hasn't rotted thru. I do agree with you on the Dodge build quality/rustproofing. I can pretty much say that 95% of all 2nd generation trucks in my part of the world have the bottom of their doors and tailgate rotted out.
Pete

Yes, it is the orginal muffler. But 10 years in this part of the country is nothing. We dont salt the roads, and our weather just isnt that extreme. Ive had trucks with the original mufflers that were decades old.

I did say dodge crap somewhat tongue and cheek. Ive been very pleased with it. It looks good and runs well. Only a couple of relatively minor problems.

Perfect time to upgrade to a 4 inch exhaust. Another vote for MBRP, stainless if you plan on keeping it.

Well, Im on the road, and its 1200 miles to get home. It needed to be replaced, and I had some time, so I had it done. What they had was a 4 inch Magnaflow. Is that a good brand ?

I have no experience with Magnaflow but I have heard that it is a good brand. If you purchased the aluminized exhaust instead of stainless here is a tip that I used on mine. Go to your nearest auto parts store and get some Duplicolor high heat ceramic paint, I used silver. Wipe down your exhaust with denatured alcohol then spray a couple of coats of the ceramic paint on it. I did this to mine when I installed it seven years ago and it still looks like new.

This also works for the 409 stainless exhaust systems which tend to get a surface rust. If you have the 304 stainless exhaust I would leave it uncoated because it stays nice and shiny.

Seattle does in fact use salt on the roads. They did stop salting for a few years but started again a few years ago after the city was shut down for a week because of ice and sand and gravel couldn't cut it. (The mayor lost his job, in part, because of that; they were afraid of salt leaching into the ocean!!!) Most of the areas around Seattle also use salt.

Very happy with my 5" Magnaflow system. Quality stuff, the fitment was excellent.

You're right, I forgot they started again (thank God). But, none the less, cars just dont rust away around here.
