This has likely been covered before but what is the general feeling about rustproofing?

Iv'e seen articles that say it's a waste of money. I've had people quite reasonably say that it creates moister pockets and increases the likelihood of rust formation.

I aso want to have the body last as long as the engine.

I'm in salty (4-5months of year) Wisconsin. I wash the truck quite a bit. I also visit lots of farms (manure, gravel, mud).

Thumbs up or down on dealer "installed" rustproofing. How about 'Ziebart' or the like?

Your right about the pros and cons of rustproofing. Ive had the opportunity to work on some very expensive cars that were heavily undercoated(mercedes). These cars would tend to rust in the same spots ie the bottom of the rockers and quarter panels. Most of the German cars are well covered inside and out but they still can rust. And that is rust behind the undercoating. I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon where it tends to rain quite a bit in the winter. I didnt undercoat my truck since the metal on these are galvinized clear through. I just keep it clean to avoid dirt pockets which can hold in moisture. In your case,it may not hurt. Do it before the truck has been driven and its still clean underneath. If you find spots that do come loose, there are rattle cans of undercoating you can buy for touching up. 3M is one. Also dont plug up any drain holes. Born and raised in Beloit moved here in 68 havent beenback there since.

I heard the Pros and Cons as well and then had mine undercoated so I didn't have to listen to ping of gravel on the bottom side. I don't think that it helps with rust protection because of the galvanized metals that are used today. I read a post a few days ago about a product that is applied with your garden hose and neutralizes the salt. You might search for it.

If I read issuse 26 correctly, then adding a coating for anti-rust would void the DC 100k rust-thru warranty. Might want to check this out (even tho the dealers sell it doesnt mean its approved by DC).

Just my 0. 02$ worth (oops - gonna have to goto bank and get more change)

I had my truck rustproofed at Ziebart when it was brand new. I fiqured for the amount of money the truck cost, I wanted it to last as long as the engine #ad
. Overall I`m glad I did it.

Once a year you have to take it back to Ziebart to get the undercarriage powerwashed ($35) and they "touch up" any areas N/C.

We have lots of salt put on our streets in Connecticut during the winter. I`ve seen the damage it can to to metal.

I would do it again if I were to buy another new truck. Its worth the peace of mind #ad

Doc,

I read several months back of a couple of guys in the northeast saying that they coat the underside of their trucks with oil, then in the spring they power wash it off. I cant recall when it was posted.
