My truck now has 24K. miles and I looked under it the other day and noticed a great big piece of the paint from the cover is gone! I crawled under and the paint that was still there is flaking away and the cover is rusty. All this has happened in the last 10K. mi. (after I changed the rear diff oil) is it crappy paint or something else?

Same thing happened to my truck. I hope its the paint. Someone suggested on another thread that it could be high diff. temps. That would have to be pretty high temps to burn the paint off. Think I'll go to a synthetic oil and a mag Hy-Tec.

Mine is pealing off too. I'm sure it's a crapy paint job. I plan to repaint it with Rustolium or something like that. It would be pretty easy to do a better job than the factory did.

I really don't think the gears run that hot. Last spring after towing heavy for almost 300 miles I could put my hand on the cover and hold it there for several seconds. Certainly was not hot enough to burn good paint. Next time I change the oil I will clean it up and put BBQ paint on it.

Cheap Paint Job (factory)

I noticed on the back side of rear axle passenger side some rust spots where paint was peeling off. Before I repaint, I'm going to treat with a rust converter an then choose a better quality paint to re-shoot it.

My 2 cents worth. . On my 04, I noticed after a few thousand miles, everything started to rust. With that in mind, The first week of ownership of my 05, I wiped down everything that was bare metal, "driveshaft, yoke" etc and painted with a few cans of semi gloss black Rustolium. It looks great and I think if I keep my eye on things, I will touch up as needed and not have the same rust problem as I had with my 04. I plan to keep this truck for several years. I have pictures in "readers rigs". . My 04 was the darker blue "Patiroit Blue and the new one is Atlantic Blue" I really like the lighter Atlantic blue much better. The paint quality is also much better on the newer truck. I also installed the mud flaps on the 2nd day of ownership. No rock chips as of yet! I also dont see the light surface scratches when I wash the Atlantic Blue truck. My darker truck looked like HE11 after i owned it 2 weeks. Scratches everywhere along with several dozen rock chips. Good luck on the rust and pealing paint problem. Just try to stay on top of it and you should be fine.
