Well I got out the spray rust inhibitors (2cans), and went from front to back spraying the drive train of my new 03, it was almost solid rust. I had to do the same on the 99, that took 3 cans I think:confused: , but it was a long bed 3500.

You would think Dodge would shoot a little paint on them after assembly????

When you say you have a "rusty drive train" do you mean the drivshafts only or does this include the axles and other components. I only ask because I saw another post awhile back regarding rusty drive trains so I looked under my truck and the only things that are rusty are the two driveshafts, which by the way have been rusty on all my previous vehicles. If you want to see rust look under a Ford :eek: :eek: because everything from the frame to the axles is rusty.

On a side note I just purchased a '03 Tahoe (please don't hate me for buying a Chevy) for my wife and while I was performing it's first oil change I noticed that the whole undercarriage is coated in a black wax like substance the smears and sticks to your clothes if it is touched. I have never seen anything like it and I don't know how well it will hold up so if someone has some insight that would be great.

I think they call it motor oil ;)

Just kidding. I just sold the wife's 01 Suburban for an Acura, and am never looking back.

Mine has rusty driveshafts and transmission. I'll just shoot all the bare metal parts with some black paint. Then the whole underside, inside doors and tailgate will get sprayed with oil before winter.

mLamb, it is loctite rust neutralizer, it is an acid that turns rust into a black finish suspended in a lacquer base. there are several products similar to it on the market check the paint section.

the main culprits were the drive shafts, but also the front spindles and U joints, as well as the "pitman arm" and a couple of "spots" on the engine. the problem I see is once you start getting rust it will spread, (there was already a couple of spots on the diff probably from the drive shaft.

they do go to the trouble of spraying the frame, springs etc, so my question was why don't they do the rest? had a 97' gasser 1500 it was painted throughly, including the drive shafts, not a spot of rust on it! my new 2500 and the 3500 were at least twice the cost of the 1500 for that money shouldn't they spend $1. 50 on some paint???:{

Fellows fellows fellows you got to remember they are trying to cut costs. Another mark against dem engineers,designers or whatever they call em.

My '95 had the waxy coating on the frame. I liked it. I think it even added some sound damping. Surface rust doesn't hurt the driveshaft but it makes it hard to change the u-joints. My '84 Isuzu P'up had a rusty driveshaft and four bad u-joints that pushed my patience to the limit. I dobbed alittle oil on the u-joint keepers on my '03. It looks faaaantastic!:D
