was under the hood the other day doing an oil change and noticed the mighty cummins block is a rusty mess. anyone else ever see this?... . james

You should see my 12 Valve

I think you can poke one of your fingers through the freeze plugs if you tried, also the oil pan is about on its way out!

Still love the New England weather though

Well after a look at mine this PM Its got some surface rust with 290 miles on it. I guess Cummins titanium black was getting too expensive so now they attempt some kind of clearcoat on it that keeps it looking good while it sits on the dealer lot...

Remember that rust on cast iron isn't like rust on steel. Iron doesn't rust catastrophically the way steel does. Rather, it will form a thin layer of rust on the surface which will choke off the oxygen supply and prevent rust traveling farther. There are iron ocean ships that have spent over 100 years in a saltwater bath that are still structurally sound.

I have noticed this on my '06. I guess Cummins decided they could save a few pennies by skipping the block paint!

You should see the rail containers these engines ride in to Chicago, then to Mexico on rail. They definately aren't water tight. Total shipments have had to go back because they were all rusty.
