Mountain driving with an RV behind

Airstream Toy Hauler

We are pulling our 5th wheel from Modesto, CA to San Diego and thinking about laying over for the night before tackling the LA traffic. I was thinking some where around Gorman & Pyramid Lake, but the reviews for the campground there have not been good. Any recommendations for places near I-5? Thanks - Doug

You could always stop in Bakersfield at the bottom of the grapevine is a campground, but then you're just under the halfway point. We went from San Diego to Sacramento and in each direction, we stopped in Bakersfield. All we did was pull in to a spot and plug in the electrical and spend the night. Didn't bother with water or leveling.

You've got bigger "Ones" than I do. If we tow to San Diego, I always take the 210 east and bypass the heart of LA. Them lanes get awfully narrow!

i agree here. take 5 to the 210 and cut across to 15 south to san diego. stay away from the 405 and 5 thru downtown. if you need to cut back to the coast, i5, then do it down by escondido at the 78 west.

What you have to do is go through LA mid morning, very early in the morning or very late at night. Avoid it during morning and afternoon rush hours. The worst part is when the 5 goes down to 1 lane. It's not the end of the world.

Ditto to FMJ. You don't want to go thru LA at anytime if you have a chance to avoid it. The 210 lets you miss most of the LA traffic.

You can try one of these RV parks. Castaic Lake RV Park,Phone 661-257-3333

or Valencia Travel Village, Phone 661-257-3333.

Travel Village is just off of the 5 about a mile west on the State Highway 126. Its a good size park.

Good Luck

Mike

When running between Washington and San Diego with a 48' reefer, I would do I-5, I-210, Highway 57 south and then down to I-5. I have found that even in traffic times, it flowed pretty well.

210 is the way to go, the roads are narrow as mentioned before, but they are very rough and the last time I took my Arctic Fox through LA, I swore I would never do it again. I found my RV a mess when I opened it up at the rest stop just before the Grapevine, and thats with shocks.

Amen! No matter what time of day you try to go through the heart of LA on the 5... its still going to be much more pleasurable taking the 210.

1 more way

I think I would go 99s to 58e to 395s to 15s . Have been to nor cal many times and come home that way just to avoid LA altogether

if he chooses to go this way, a lay over in tehachapi at mountain valley airport park. its a basic park with water and power for hook ups. dump is available. this time of year its cold and not many people. fun to watch the gliders take off, and there is no noise. inside trailer you can't hear the tow planes. although i have to say i personally HATE the 395 portion. i always have to take it going to the sierras. it is another option he could consider.

I agree with Eric

I go to Seal Beach and San Diego a few times a year towing my 30' Airstream and I ALWAYS use 210 to 57 to circumnavigate the 405/5/L. A. mess. I belong to the Elks Lodge and I usually go from Sacramento to the Elks Lodge at Santa Clarita and spend the night in their RV Park then head out mid-morning and make San Diego around noon or a little after with very few if any traffic problems.

This is a good route also. Tehachapi Pass (58) is way smoother than Grapvine. Also, the town of Adelanto has a decent/quite RV park on the west side of 395 that's just a few miles before the I-15.

I-210 to the I-15 is the way to go, very easy drive. Valencia Travel Village is on SR-126 about a mile west of I-5.

Go the 210 east to the 15 south.

I live in victorville (next to adelanto) work in san pedro; during the week I stay in pedro!

I have traveled all of the freeway systems in los angeles, my birthplace and home for too many years, stay off of the 405, 605, 57 even if you are NOT towing, even at night!

I personally avoid 395 from 58 south as this is where many highway deaths occur. I did work in Lone Pine for 18 months so I know 395 well.

If you DO want to take 58 west to the 15 south, this is also a good route; there is 2 lanes in each direction most of the way east of 395. Tehachapi is a real nice place to layover, you will like that town, VERY SAFE, although snow is expected this weekend.

hope this helps you decide

Lock everything tighter than a bulls *** at fly time when staying in Adelanto. It is one of the bigger Meth Lab capital's. I ve stayed there for the Grand Prix, they will take anything that isnt nailed down (while ur sleeping)#@$%!. I lost all my gas cans and a locked BMX bike.

you may be well on the road or in SD already, but just to add to the conversation

the 210-57-5 way is the way we go all the time, even without a trailer. much easier and calmer. depending on traffic on 5 it can save time or cost you about 30 minutes, but its worth it

however, there has been construction at 57 and 60 for the past few years, so plan well in advance of the interchange and pay attention to the signs. its rather congested in that area. also, if you come back that way, pay attention again as 57 splits off with little warning, otherwise you end up heading east on 60 and the next turn around it miles down the highway.

cant help you with places to stop though

That interchange has been finished for some time, however, 210 to 15 south is way faster. I live at the 210/15 interchange and your wellcome to park in front of my house for the night, and I can loan you a generator for the nite.

A lot of great responses from the members of TDR. To bad Dimone hasn't responded with at least an acknowledgement. Maybe he is stuck at the 405 and 101 interchange or worse yet perhaps locked up in the Disneyland

parking lot.
