Who has an Equal-i-zer brand hitch?

For those of you who have installed the RV trailer plug in the bed where did you tie the wiring harness. I called a local rv dealer ship and asked them how they would do it. The service tech said that they you use scotch locks. It seems to me that the proper way would be to run the cable or wiring harness back to the existing rv plug and tie in their using solder and heat shrink or mount abox with a terminal block and tie all the wiring on the terminal block. What are your thoughts and opinions?

My bed jack is connected to the wiring for the license plate jack. I solder and shrink tube ALL my electrical connections,I've had too many Scotch-Locs and crimp connectors fail. Sometimes if it's a hard place to work on I use an uninsulated crimp connector, crimp it to hold the wires together, then solder it. You will have hard finding an installer who even has a soldering iron nowdays though.

ROG,

On my '00 I ran the 7-way cord around to the factory plug under the rear bumper. I did run a seperate 8 gauge 12 volt charge line from the driver side battery through a circuit breaker and a relay controlled by the ingition switch to isolate the starting batteries from the RV battery. The factory 12 volt charge wire is too small and doesn't have an isolating relay. My Lance camper has a 3-way fridge and it draws about 15-20 amps when running on 12 volts.

On the 97 that I had, I tapped into the short harness that runs from the main harness to the factory plug soldering the connections and using heat shrink tubing.

No way is anybody going to use Scotch-Loks on my truck!!

I also will not use scotch locks. Im ordering my 5er this weekend so I will be wiring my truck in myself. I will also be installing my own hitch. This is about the only way to make sure its done right. Im thinking about ordering an OEM plug. I will then cut the wiring, solder and splice the longer wires and then plug it in at the rear. If I ever haul a trailer than all that needs to be done is unplug the 5er wiring and plug in the trailer wiring.

The genltman I bought the truck from relocated the factory plug into the bed. He cut the inside of the box side and mounted the factory plug there. Originally I didn't like this setup, but I have made my 7 to 4 and 7 to 6 way adapters long enough for everything to work out fine.

Mine is in the middle of the bed (92 D250).
Dedicated wire from the tow controller for
the brakes, new lead thru a relay for
running lights, small hole in the bottom
of the bed.
The 5er's cable lays in the bed very nicely.

I soldered and sealed all wires into the existing trailer hitch wiring harness with the exception of the Battery and Ground. These two wires are separate 6-gauge. The Power is activated by a solenoid switch (ignition on) and the ground includes a 0. 01-ohm shunt so that I can monitor how much current the camper is pulling.

I installed mine in the side of the bed. I drilled a hole and mounted the 7-pole flat in the side. I ran a 5' pigtail and plugged into the existing harness on the factory hitch. Works fine.

I didn't want to cut, splice, tape, solder or otherwise damage the factory wiring so I thought and thought and thought on a way to do this cleanly to my '97 1 ton and then it hit me... No way I thought sounds TOO easy...

I just unplugged the factory 2 plug harness, took out the 4) 1/4" screws holding the factory female section to the bumper, drilled a hole in the bed between the tailgate and wheel well, dropped the wiring down the hole and plugged it right back into the factory harness which runs right along the drivers side frame rail.

Then in a stroke of luck found a factory harness on another truck in the bone yard. (My dealer wants $95. 00 for the factory plug setup) so $5. 00 later I put the "junk one" back into the bumper location. Now I just swap the factory harness plugs to what ever I am towing, gooseneck into the bed & tag to the bumper. This also avoids having to crawl up into the bed under the gooseneck just to plug it in!!

A word of caution, check the length of the wiring BEFORE you drill the hole so you don't place it TOO high!!! Mine is about 5" above the bed but measure, measure then measure again before you drill...

Hope this helps... Did for me!
