Looking for a Good Mechanic

Another Headlight Question.

So, I have yet to order my tires for my 19. 5 wheels, planning to do it the first of next week.

My question is, anyone running 265/70-19. 5's on their dually AND how much space do you have between your rear wheels/tires? I do not was to have to use a spacer between them, am wondering about the 265's.

I know there is plenty of space between the 245's, but I would really like to run the 265's.

Any input would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

btw, I am going to be running the Vision 181 Heavy Hauler wheels, they are 6. 75"s wide and the 265's will run on them.

Thanks, CD

Folks running 265 on Rickson site are using 7. 50 rims (from what I have seen). The offset on 7. 50 rim is 5. 75 vs 5. 50 on the 6. 75 rims. This gets you an additional 1/2 inch clearance between the tires on the back. No spacers needed. On 245 the gap between tires (no bulge point) is roughly 2 inches.

With 245's on 6. 75 rims, the back will look like this (you can see the gap in the pic):

#ad

Hope that helps.

Thank you morbius, that is exactaly what I was looking for. I found some width specs on tires. The 245's appear to have a 1. 10 distance between the tires, the 265's would have a 0. 875 distance between the tires. I guess the 245's would be the better choice even though there is virtually no side wall flex either unladen or laden.

To have similar spacing with the 265's I'd have to add a 1/4" spacer. Tire height would be 1" gain and tire width would be a 1" gain also.

1. 10 must be at the bulge/contact point (which is dependent on pressure level). You must be looking at doing 265 on 6. 75 rims.

Yes, no side wall action and some darn heavy tires. I had to drop to 65 psi (unloaded) on the rear of mine to try and soften things a little. Dang stiff tires compared to the originals. On my truck, 245x70/19. 5, speedo reads 1. 5 MPH slow at 65.

Cheers.

Yes, 1. 10 is the bulge contact point, and YES I am looking at doing 265 on 6. 75 rims, I have the Vision 181 Heavy Haulers. I haul heavy but do not expect to EVER make them bulge, I bet the axle itself would give first.

I have a Smarty Jr, will adjust the speedo for the tires.

THANKS again for your input, you have been very helpful.

LOL ! Yes, I think our axles, bed and possibly frame will give way before the tire and rims will !

Glad I was able to help. Happy New Year.

Cheers.

Rickson wheel has 2 dodges and 4 fords running 265's and no word of wheel spacers.

Thank you for that information, I will have to give them a call. I really don't want to invest in tires until I am sure about the spacing between the duals. I would prefer the 265's, but as I said, I don't want a spacing problem.

on edit - I did take a look at their gallery, they describe what is being used on the trucks with each picture group, and I did take note that several are running the 265's, and like you said, no mention about spacers. I sent them an e-mail asking a few questions.

I have Eagle 19. 5s with 265/70 have good clearance on the front fenders with my aluminun runnings boards and stock height I was told i would need a 2-inch front lift to run 285/70. The duals have about 1 inch between them. I am happy with the 19. 5s and look better then the stock wheels because the fender well is not so emphty. The ride is alittle more harsh but not much and dont think it hurt my MPGs get between 16-19 on the highway. With 3. 73 ratio I turn 1500@55,1800@70,2000@78 and 2600@100mph. If it were to do over again I would spend the extra money go with Rickerson people say they do everything right the first time. I spent a couple of months getting my tires not to shake the truck. Shaved tires to true them up and balanced them have 90k on them might get 110k-120k out of some cheap Chinese tires.

THANKS JExum - good information. I think I am just going to go with the 265's, if there is an inch clearance, all that's needed, I know the sidewalls will never flex with the loads I haul. I saw a Dodge with the same wheels I have, and tires I am thinking of getting this weekend in a truck stop, looked good and had about an inch of clearance, good to go. Now to order tires.

I just put a set of 19. 5" wheels and tires on my dually.
I have 4. 10 gears so I wanted a tall/narrow tire for as much roll-out as possible. I'm trying to get nearer the RPM sweet spot at 70MPH, W/O changing gears. The stock gears and 16" tires/wheels were not cutting it on the freeway.
According to my calculations the 8R/19. 5s brought my RPMs down about 12. 4% and effectively brought my gear ratio down from 4. 10 to about 3. 60, and I have about a 2" space between my dually tires with the 6&3/4" wide wheels.
I haven't put enough miles on this setup to make any decisions about fuel mileage, but just guessing, it looks to be about the same, and the ride is a little bit stiffer.
I don't know how much of this info. you need but I thought I'd put it out there anyway because I see so many questions on this site pertaining to the changes I just made.

RHestand - THANKS for your input, I wonder what size the 8R/19. 5's equate to, I am guessing the 245's, since they are 33. 4 or 33. 5 diams. I have been running 315's and have 3. 73 gear ratio, currently pretty much in the sweet spot at 65mph, that is why I want to go with the 265's, it will keep me at about the same rpm's.

And yes, there are a lot of people who are looking at the 19. 5 wheels/tires and they DO have a lot of questions about them.

CD-I just went out and measured my 8Rs on my truck and they are 33. 5" tall and I'm 99% sure before I installed them they measured 110" roll-out.
