As far as performance, theoretically I can see it being a decrease. Seems to me like doubling the pipe size part way down the exhaust pipe might cause the gases to slow down, causing backpressure. But the same would be true of dual stacks. I'm no expert on the matter, so I may be wrong.
Regardless, the seat-of-the-pants-o-meter tells me my truck picked up a little with the dual exhaust, and it sure sounds great. Mine does fit with a BFG 315 spare, so a stock spare would fit easily. There are pics in the signature in my link.
