This is my first standard trans, an NV4500, so I have a few questions about the fluid change.

There is a PTO cover on both sides of the transmission, which one should I use to drain the fluid ?? I will take the cover completely off to try to get as much of the fluid out of the bottom of the transmission as possible.

I plan on using Redline fluid. But I live in Utah where in the summers it can break 100* and can fall to single digits in the winter. So which fluid would be best for me, the regular MTL or the MT-90 ?? I don't drive more than 5 minutes to work, but do take long trips both in summer and in winter.

TIA

Pull the cover off the drivers side. Stuck on the inside of that cover you will find a square magnet (approx 1" x 1"). Pop the magnet of the cover and wipe it clean of debris. You'll probably find it has about 1/16" of grey slime stuck to it. This is normal, if you see any big pieces you can begin to worry.

As for oil, I've been using redline MT-90. I used to use MTL but I decide to give the MT-90 a try and I like it better. I don't think low temps will be a problem, it's not a thick oil. If you have questions give me a shout, I've got mine torn apart on the bench right now installing a new mainshaft and imput shaft so my memory is fresh as to what they look like inside.

The NV4500 needs a GL4 (not GL5) rated oil. Different than the NV5600.

Do a search, there is lots of info about this around here. Syntorque seems to pe the prevailing answer.

On the Redline website it lists the MTL and the MT-90 as GL-4 fluids.

I wish I had the NV5600, but I bought this truck used, and they didn't have any used 6 shooters on the lot. Oh well, I'm pretty happy with this one so far.

I just changed mine yesterday. The redline rep for a real good transmission shop im my area (montana) said that a 50/50 mix of MTL and MT90 is the proper oils for the NV4500. I have about 50 miles on the truck today and I can already tell a difference. hope this helps

MT-90 is the correct fluid for a NV4500... it is a 70w90 weight oil IIRC.

The MTL is too thin at a 5w30 weight oil...
