Paid For...

Did I hear that HVAC or some of our west coast friends are coming to Muncie? There are two days remaining on an auction for a 14" x 40" Logan metal lathe that I'd love to purchase if I could get it hauled to the midwest. The lathe is in Menlo Park but it's not crated so motor frieght doesn't want it. It should ride well in an longbed CTD. Weight is 1950lbs. , Anyone willing tug a lathe out here for some bombing ;) money?? :)

Someone just drew my attention to this post and I thought I'd comment.

I am heading to Muncie and I wish I could drop down into Missouri on the way home. Currently it looks like I'll be stopping in Kansas to do some O-ringing and then hot foot it to Ogden for more of the same. I don't think I could fit the lathe on my trailer with my truck also loaded. What are the dimensions of the lathe.

I have a better idea. You pay for the lathe and I'll haul it to my shop where I'll keep it warm and well lubricated :)

Wish I had a lathe:(

We have had a lot of auctions over the last six months. Lots of machine shops liquidating.

How about it folks? Surely we can set up *some* kind of relay. I know there are folks driving from TX to Muncie, and as they have to return to TX (the visa's only good for a few days), MO's on the way. Anyone from CA heading east a ways? Anyone from CO/NM/AZ going to Muncie?

If Hvac can get it to Munice I can bring it through Mo on i-44 on the way home.

There's bound to be someone headed this way.

BE CAREFUL!

Be very careful as lathes are more top heavy than they appear! I worked in machine shops for 25+ years and have seen a few fall. One fell on a guy and broke his legs in numerous places.

Not to burst a bubble, but Logan tends to be a real low end machine. I would wait and try to find a LeBlond, Monarch, American or even a South Bend. I have ran a few Logans and they are not worth spit... IMO.

Lathes

I'm no expert but at the auctions the LeBlond and

South Bends bring the cash for used machines. Gimme one of those and a Bridgeport and "Be Still My Heart"!

I just had to come back and add some Oo. Oo. Oo. for emphasis!:) I just think Bridgeports are so

The leblondes are good, but if you want the best manual lathe get a mori-seiki, and yes I know as I have worked for BOTH compainies now.

Thanks guys for looking for options, if someone can get it to Muncie or even within a few hours I will pick it up. I will be in Muncie Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon (June 7-9)and could pay for the hauling and do the transfer there. I will try to find the dimensions but I would guess that it is 7' x 3' x 4. 5' high.

Mark, I freqent I-44 in the Springfield area. If you ever need assistance while passing through don't hesitate to give me a call.

The small 9" & 10" Logans we weak but I've been pleased with a couple 11" Logans that I currently have. In fact the one in Menlo Park would replace a 13" South Bend with a shorter bed.

HVAC, if you need a lathe maybe I should buy this one for you and call it a down payment on those twin turbos that I want:-laf :-laf , I had planned to visit with you at Muncie about a compound purchase;) . If you need a lathe I would be happy for you check this one out, it has a lot of tooling and has 39 hours before the auction closes. The current price is $744 and if it is in good condition it will bring a lot more in this area. Let me know if you want to check it out. If not I would still like to buy it.

Mori-Sieki = $$$$. I never knew they made manuals, or maybe I did, can't remember. If I had a B'port... ..... So much you can do with them, actually even "turned" dia's with them in a pinch. Someday one will be in the garage... .

$744?

I can't even find a good American made floor jack for $744!

I wish I had a decent shop area to put more equipment. I have a 10' brake, 4' brake, shear, pitsburgh machine, etc. I would like to have more machine shop stuff.

While driving around the penninsula one can gander into the open shop doors and see rows of two story high CMC machines. Many shops are now auctioning off there equipment. I just got a notice about one in Carson City NV and another here in the bay.

Regarding the lathe in question, the only place I might be able to fit it would be over the ramps once they are folded up. I'd have no way off unloading it to get my truck off. Seems like a project for another day when the lil' truck isn't tagging along. Somebody call "Yogibear", he's always up for a drive:)
