Lotsa Fuel

Craig,

We aren't running any Nos right now, nor have we since the last time we went to Palmdale. The fuel cleans up a lot as the turbos hit full boost. These Performance Diesel injectors are LARGE!!! Oh my!

Nowel: The reason I asked this is KatDiesel ( I think... ) was running into issues with the excessive amounts of smoke at the starting line.

After seeing your tailpipe location - I wondered if you had the same problems.

I know of one guy that even had to make a tailpipe 'stack' to point the soot up instead of at the crowd/lights/starter dude/etc. Down at Englishtown, this tailpipe got blown off due to a sticky NOS solenoid... . :-laf

Yes I had problems before. Twice... same track same day... due to the wind. Had a 11. 2 and 11. 5 slip in the opposite lanes... sure fired the crowd up. But other then those two times haven't had any issues since... ... ... ... thats in about 125 to 140 dragstrip runs (i'd have to count the slips for the correct number).

My memory was correct, but this seems like an isolated issue... . This is still something to keep on the back burner... despite the slight chance of it happening.

I saw it happen in Vegas @ MM 02. Most of the big fuel trucks (nitrous guys) ran into the same problem on some runs... . due to the wind direction. As long as the wind isn't blowing the smoke towards the lights it isn't a factor. Least in my experiences.

Smoke

What Kat said kinda chalks it up to a few isolated instances. Most folks know we had trouble in vegas.

I think that when you have two overfueled diesels at the line, then you increase the chance for a problem with the lights. There's simply much more smoke then a single rig against a car.

The next thing is the wind.

At Sears Point the wind comes right down the track and blows the smoke behind and away. At Sac we didn't have any wind so the smoke stayed behind the lights and away from the tree area. And like I said, we take the right lane to keep the interference down to a minimum.

Nowel:

as your nemesis on the other side, I think you need to look at the films closely and see where all the black smoke is going to at the rate of 90psi boost.

Point that thing out the back rather than the side and you will have a jet going down the track!!!!

really glad to have been there to see all the fun, maybe you can tell the story about the track guy on the tractor running into a little soot on Adam's last pre-flight... .

:--) :--) :--)

BIG Jake, you don't understand the effect that exhaust/jet plume has. You ever notice how a helicopter has a rotor in the rear to prevent the craft from spinning around the axis of the engine? Well we have the same problem. If we pointed the ex rearward, parallell with the crank, then the entire capsule would begin to rotate based on the axis of the crankshaft and we would turn the rocket into a waring blender. Nobody wants that!:( There would be nothing to stop it!!!

So we prevent this by applying counter balance in the form of 90psi @ 1500 cfm out of the torsional stabilizing discharge nozzle. I know, it's not your daddy's oldsmobile. But believe me, these things have been tested and tested again. We lost more chimpanzees in the testing phase then I care to recall. All in the name of science!;)

BTW

Found the problem with the Nos, a bullet connector was pulled loose within the center console. Works now as far as I can tell.

The truck is in a machine shop tonight. We are welding tabs on and I will safety wire the connector pipes together.

Hope we can get to the track in the next couple weeks to get the 11 second time slip. Then we can go for a full Nos pass.

I almost spit my beer all over the screen when I read this last night... LOL funny we are still teaching Jake all the nuances of flight after all this time. :p
