trying to wake up the 24v h. o. "safely"... i bought the truck(2002 6 speed,4wd ,swb) in aug. 2002new... still have alot of warranty left.

truck has a little over 20k miles. have egt, boost and fuel pressure gauges installed also has new proguard 7 filter/box. anything i can do to wake it up a little and not void the remaining 3+ yrs. of warranty? i have been reading tdr for over a year and have seen many upgrade routes... kinda confused as to what to do next.

thanks and keep up the great work everyone, mike in western n. c.

An Edge EZ would help boost low end dramatically and you could remove it in five minutes without a trace if you encountered a warranty problem. A four inch exhaust would take some heat off of the turbo and they sound nice.

check FAQ

Mike,

On the top of this forum there is a "24 Valve Engine and Transmission FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions (Members Only)" category with a thread called "PROPER ORDER FOR UPGRADING YOUR ISB" check that out ... . there are a lot of good and safe ideas there.

Good luck.

4" exhaust was my first bomb. And well worth it in my book. It lowers your temps, sounds good, and helps you spool up noticably quicker! It probably gives you a couple more HP and a little better mileage as well, but not that much on a stock truck.

I think that the best mod that I have done so far is the BD III's and the Boost Fooler. I don't know how much power you are wanting to get, but the inj's are awesome! They go in/come out relatively easy, and I would consider them safe, you already have gauges. I don't have an exhaust, yet, will be straight pipe prolly tom. , and the BHAF is on order, but I would say that the best bang for your buck is gonna be injs. Yeah, gas milage went up, when I can keep my foot out of it:) They should make them from the factory this way, the injectors really woke the truck up and made it so much more fun to drive. And if you want you can make smoke, which I do like to do, but everything in moderation. The way that the HO's are made, they respond alot better to injs than a box, which is why I personally went with them. Hope some of my ramblings and this personal experience can help. James

thanks for the info guys... when i can get ahead enough i would

like to start with a few upgrades... thanks again, mike

I bought my truck in July 2002. Started with lift and tires. Then exhaust, then gauges, and an EZ two days ago. The EZ really made the truck come alive. I read that it should have made it more noisy but I have not seen it! 275's are next. The exhaust is such a sweet sound but the EZ works even on a H. O. Either are safe and either are a good bomb!!:)

Here's the Short answer: Safe BOMBs means CONSERVATIVE bombs.

Mach 1. 5s and a boost fooler/elbow. Period Dot end of story. Intake and exhaust are nice, but you won't NEED either one. Should peak right around 32 psi of boost. Almost no smoke. Better mileage (the only injectors that I am aware of besides 275s that consistently improve mileage).

You spend $700 for the 1. 5s and another $120 for the boost fooler. You have clean SAFE, smokeless power that only cost $820.

An EZ has it's place, but my opinion (as an owner/user of one) is that it's more of a glorified boost fooler. Run around once with it plugged/unplugged and you will see this is about the case. Once you have injectors, the EZ doesn't seem like much at all. It DOES give you more rattle.

So you can do like I did and spend:

$500- EZ

$560-- DD2s

=$1160

. . for about 120hp that'll smoke and get hot (and have worse mileage).

Or you can spend $820 for about 80-90 hp that's clean safe and fun with BETTER mileage.

I certainly would have done things a little differently knowing what I know now.

I agree with Hohn that injs should come before a box and give the most bang for the buck, but a boost fooler for $120 is pretty pricey, mine was only $55 (new), and I got the injs used off of the TDR classifieds for right at $400, and no core charge. Some of the best parts that I have gotten have been through the classifieds. -James

I ran a set of 275's for quite a while as my only mod to the truck and they consistently gained me several mpg's hand calculated. The extra power was noticeable, and you couldnt make them smoke noticeably more than stock. I bet the Mach 1. 5's are even nicer. If you can contain yourself to stop here  than a boost fooler and some light injectors like 275's or little mach injectors should be just fine for the truck. I think this engine will go quite a bit up in the power band before significant long term issues are to be had but if you dont want to mess with clutch upgrades you'll like the injectors. Oh, dont forget gauges!!!

Don't get me wrong! I read that injectors should be first. I am looking very forward to injectors but I could not pass up a 3 month old EZ off the classifieds for $300!

It's a great place to shop!:)
