If you guys needed to go on a three hour trip pulling a heavy trailer what would be the highest possible safest EGT's that you could hold for an extended period? I was pulling a trailer today and was consistantly at 850 degrees for several hours. Going up slight hills I can easily get over 1000 degrees.

Now, if you look at my sig you can see why I have the high temps... stock turbo coupled with bigger sticks and the MAD ECM. I will be getting a bigger turbo next but would like to know what is a safe "continuous EGT".

Thanks

Phil

If your thermocouple is mounted pre-turbo, your EGTs look fine. If I hammer hard pulling our 16,000 lb GVWR 5th wheel while accelerating up to Interstate speeds or pulling a grade, I can see 1400 degF pre-turbo EGT, so I'll drive by the pyrometer and adjust my right foot to limit EGT to 1100-1200 degF for the long grades. Having said that, I'm admittedly conservative by nature, but I've always arrived at my destination and never had any problems.

By the way, my truck would produce 1300 degF EGTs while towing when it was absolutely stock, so you have to think there are a lot of stock trucks without any gauges out there hitting 1300 degF EGTs pulling trailers up steep grades day in and day out without reports of engine failures, so that probably indicates Dodge/Cummins' thinking on this matter.

I indicated 1150-1200* constant one time for about four hours pulling a heavy trailer with a ridiculous headwind. Everything is still fine.

Yes, My probe is pre-turbo (I do not see the sense in post turbo probes). So, is the consensus 1250 degrees continuous? That seems like a lot. I am also a conservative guy and It scares me to think what happens at 1250 for four hours...

Keep in mind that 5 and 6 probably burn hotter than 1 through 4. I think it would be interesting to see a thermocouple at each cylinder exhaust port and a gauge that allowed you to switch between cylinders. I know they have those on large industrial and military applications.

Thanks

Temps seem low to me

Wow, I would have expected those temps to be higher than that. I have been trying to figure out what size injectors to get with EGT's being a big concern. You only have an HY and were able to keep it that cool with 2. 5's?

Man if that is the case I would think I could achieve similar results with 2. 5's and my HX-35.

How high do they get empty when hot-rodding?

Thanks

Are you running a stock Trans???

Tractorface,

Yeah... I can see 1350 degrees when I get on it! But it really is not as bad as I thought. I do have the turbo turnbuckled so I can hit 32 PSI of boost but with that itty bitty 9cm housing I am really surprised about EGT's.

Also, keep in mind that I do not have a fueling box, just the Mad ECM. I am sure if I put a comp on it and put her on 5x5 you can kiss the EGT's goodbye!! If I had a HX I would feel better about it.

What I do notice though is that the EGT's, although not as high as I would of expected, do seem to run hotter in general. For example, Before the 2. 5 sticks were in I would drive around empty and average about 650 degrees cruising around. Now I seem to see 800 degrees much more often yet the high end has not had that much of an increase.

I really want a larger turbo but since cash is tight I am going to drive easy until I get some money saved up. I will tell ya this though... I thought for sure after I put the 2. 5 sticks in I would need a B1 or at least a dodgezilla and I am surprised by the results. I know I could see more HP with a bigger turbo but I will get there eventually. I may even go to a HX-35 as an interim step to see how well it performs if I can find one cheap enough.

Hope that helps.

Phil

Yes it does

You just convinced me I can Run the 2. 5's that Jetpilot reccomended on my HX-35 for now. I'll still plan on upgrading to a PDR HX-40 later but I really wanted to do it in steps since I spent an awful lot of $$$ on the truck this past year

Thanks

Tractorface,

HEY!! I forgot, you are the guy in my neck of the woods!! Yeah, the 2. 5's are awesome! I love'em! Let me know if you need help with the install. I did mine in 4 hours and had no issues like others have reported. I would highly recommend using a pair of bent needle nose pliers for pulling the old injectors and installing the new ones and a short 19mm wrench for the rear injector line nuts that are in the head. It is small back there!!

Do you wrench on tractors? Just curious cause of your nickname. I am restoring a Ford 881 with a dreaded select-o-speed in it.

Have fun!

Need to make up a good story

I did play around with tractors a littlee while back, nothing too cool though. Just a diesel compact tractor I used on the old property. The name came out of frustration. Way back when I was signing up for a hotmail account and could not come up with a name that was not takin. Being totally paranoid I refused to use my real name (stupid I know) anyway typed in Tractorface and it worked :{ Since my memory is short I stick with it. Told ya I needed a better story.

Thanks for the offer, a little expierience might be a good thing :-laf

I get to play with diesel gensets from 20kw to 2800kw all day long so I learned to love smoke ;) I see big honkin turbo's every day and start dreamin..... enough of that.

Thanks for the help.

BTW, my plans are to ditch the Raptor in favor of a Catcher in he future. I really don't know squat about the raptor and worry about excesive timing.

See Ya

Rick

You are welcome to drive my truck. Be fore warned though... I have a slushy auto trans that is going south so it may not be a good example of the power you will have.

Just PM me if interested. I live off of Jarretsville Rd. between Forest Hill and Jarretsville.
