Is there a number that Cummins sets for how high you can go EGT's, is it a personal number you are comfortable with, how long can you hold that temp, and do you have to worry about guage accuracy?

I've ran temps as high as 1350*-1400* up long grades, but I feel more comfortable at 1250*-1300*.

With no box, it runs around 950*-1000*, maybe 1050*.

These temps are loaded with a trailer and pulling long grades.

my 06 runs around 1200 stock but sometimes gauge accuracy is in the back of my mind i had a tst and a diprol gauge that would read about 100 degrees apart i just went with the higher one and i was running them both off of the same probe.

EGT's and timing

A question I've had for a long time related to Egts is timing. If one advances timing, as many of us do, EGT's tend to go down. But it is my understaning that moving the injection event(s) earlier, lowers EGT's (in the manifold) but raises piston and head temps. So if you are fueling very heavy with advanced timing and pushing the ragged edge of EGTs in the manifold, I worry about the inside of the engine. The manifold and turbo may be at an exceptable temp, but what about the cylinders?? To be safe, I figured when I get around to playing with the '06, I'd adjust the fueling at the stock retarded timing to a safe level, then advance the timing without adding fuel. Anyone have any comments?

Yes, 1300 degF EGT with advanced timing will put significantly more heat into the piston crowns, cylinder head, etc. than 1300 degF EGT with stock timing. That's why, despite the fact that my 2nd gen 24V ran 1300 degF pre-turbo EGT stock, I limit it to 1200 degF or so when towing up long grades. I'm a pretty conservative fellow who's too old to think about walking home!
