I have a stock 24 valve, slushbucket, 4x4, 98 1/2 - 2500. It does have 285-75-16 tires and a straight pipe. I am wanting to pull a gooseneck and load that weighs in at 9400# total. Overall weight is something like 16,900. Will the automatic handle the load without bombing. I would figure on locking out on big hills or when it seems to be struggling. I live in Okla. and plan on pulling to Laramie Wy. Oo.

Towing

I pull a #8500 5vr +- & with 285's, a DTT Auto & 3. 5's I have to leave OD locked out FWIW. Not sure of your gear ratio but if your running 285's with an auto & have 3. 5's in the rearend OD will definately be out of the question unless your traveling about 70 mph IMHO.....

Good luck,

Clay

The tow rating for your truck GCVR is -

3. 54 gears = 16,000 lbs

4. 10 gears = 18,000 lbs

I've grossed well over that before, on short trips. Between 22-25k.

You should be in reasonably good shape with 16,900 lb. gross combined weight. I routinely tow a fifth wheel with about that same weight with my pure stock '99 CTD / auto. Haven't had any problems with it. I do lock out the overdrive while towing.

Good luck pulling the hill to Laramie (west of here) on I-80 with stock fueling at that weight.

Your auto transmission is going to be making some heat pulling that hill, so make sure you have a good transmission cooler. With the torque multiplication of the trans, you'll have enough power, but probably will have to go kinda slow-- 45-55mph.

The fact that the hill crests about 7400' elevation doesn't help, either.

Heck, all he has to do is toss out a rope and grapple hook and catch the tail end of one of those fast Peterbilts to drag him up Sherman Hill..... Just has to make sure he doesn't hook a JB Hunt or Schneider by mistake... ... :D
