Winterizing the Travel Trailer

Best Way To Seal Trailer Window?

Okay guys I tow a 35' gooseneck trailer with my sled pulling rig and Kawaski mule on it. Trailer wieghs 5K truck wieghs 8K and nule is at 2K so lets asume approx 15K.

I tow this with my 2006 quad cab DRW and am looking for a little extra towing performance when cruising throuigh the mountains here out West I have a AFE intake, 5" exhaust, and SBC sprung hub dual disc clutch.

I don't want to risk having anything happen to the tow rig as its my only way to and from events, hence safe power in the title.

Thoughts?

I really love my Smarty. I just made a trip to Yellowstone and I could maintain 60-65MPH on all the passes without egt concerns (1,200-1,250). Running stock SW I was driving by the pyro keeping it at 1,350 or so and only pulling the hills at 50MPH.

Now I was only grossing 17,000 or so, but I would think you would be happy with a Smarty and keep it turned down while towing, then turn it up when empty to have fun.

Smarty on 5 with a quad boost fooler to keep the manifold pressure up around 38-40 will keep the egt's in check, especially at lower altitudes.

What does the boost fooler limit the boost to?

I have run the WILD SW and also some Beta SW's, but they seem to disable the WG completely and I have seen 43+ out of my stock turbo. I really don't want to blow up the turbo or blow a headgasket.

Scott, go with the smarty and use the lower levels. You should not have any problems with it just remember to put your gauges in!:)Now me I am know'n for towin with all the toys on full blast!:-laf then the time I run it in the safe zone it pukes an injector and takes out #1 piston!

Any trailer I tow, I just leave my smarty on 5. Pulls real hard, dosent slip the stock clutch, and its super easy to keep egt's under 1200* even with my stock air box/filter. Just got back this morning from a 350 mile run with 13,000lbs, of machinery, all highway 65-70 mph got hand calcd 12. 6 mpg's.

Scott,

C'mon bro. You own one of the most powerful pick up trucks in the world.

Sled pulling is just the extreme version of street and highway towing. Simply build yourself a milder version of what's under the hood of BBD.

Remember all those stories when Loretta's truck would break down on the way home from a pull, and Dave would tow Loretta's truck home with the white Dodge? Okay, he could'nt do that today, but he did BITD.

BTW, I don't have to back out of the fuel when I tow heavy up a mountain.

LOL:-laf it's the whole 12 valve vs 24 valve mecahnical vs plug and play still learning that portion :D I read about these horror stories with the VP44 so if I need an extra somthing to hel;p it live i. e FASS or something I just need to know.

Sounds like Smarty is the way go and that's what I have been hearing but I get me some gauges first.

Somebody was talking about something that you could stack with the smarty and it comes with the gauges ???? kind of like Bully Dogs outlook monitor I guess.

Thanks all,

I run a Quadzilla Commander with the Standard Xzillaraider and set all my back downs to whatever I want. I pull a 40ft Toyhauler that weighs around 13000 loaded for a weekend. I set my Xzillaraider on the 30HP setting and I have had no troubles pulling the larger hills ini Western NC. I know it is not the same as the big WEST mountains, but some grades are huge and I have not had a single back down yet. Pulls like a dream and seems to be one of the "safer" power mods out there for a pretty much stock truck. Scotty

What year truck is it?

I am guessing it is a 98-02 truck?

I see a lot of Common Rail guys chiming in and I am not sure their advise is valid on the VP44 trucks.

Let us know what you have and we can help give you some opinions.

Scott, my TST and Edge EZ stack work pretty well towing upwards of 33k# out this way, more so since i put on a SPS 62/14. Are you sure your trailer only weighs 5k though, I would have to think its more like 8k#.

My documentation says 5K but who knows, I never wieghed it perhaps I will some day. It has two 7K axles and there single wheel. should have went bigger there with duals but that's two late.

Any lag with SPS 62/14?

Thanks

I had bought a HTB 62/14 and was having all kinds of issues with it. I came to find out a few weeks later when I took it off that it was a 66/14#@$%!.

While I had the 66 on there I had numerous "Low boost codes" when towing. I did some research on here and found that quite a few people even get that code with a 62/14.

If you do go with a different turbo I would suggest the Smarty so that you can clear that code. That code puts the truck into "Limp mode" and it won't get out of it's own way.

There may be a guy on NWDiesels selling a SPS 62/14 here fairly soon. I think he is going with twins.

Perhaps in really hot weather you can notice it just a bit, not a big deal on my truck, on some I guess it is. Heck, you coming to SEMA, take it for a spin and see for yourself!

I think you could tow this set up with an Edge attitude, it has all the back downs, guages and levels needed and it does boost fooling. If you want to spend the extra cash you can pop for the A2 and get Tom Tom to take you up and down the highway. Lots of options with the edge.

Call bret at Winspeed hes got some good pricing right now. I know hed be more than happy to pass his savings to you. They also have the full line of Quad stuff and hes installed alot of them recently. He could tell you the pros and cons with out the biasis of having one on his truck (old 12V)
