I just received this notice in the mail today. I had heard of it but didn't pay a lot of attention assuming that if my truck was involved I'd receive a recall notice. I did and my truck is specifically included as possibly having the problem.

Has anyone had this inspection done?

The recall notice says the dealer will "tighten the front axle track bar bolt, inspect the left tie rod end and replace it if required. "

The nearest dealer is in Lubbock, about 50 miles away. I don't like or trust that dealership and don't buy trucks from them. I'm considering taking it to the selling dealer at Gainesville, 300 miles away, or to TDR member Mike Mullenax in Athens which is even farther. Either choice seems like a long distance to travel but trust and peace of mind are worth more than a few dollars worth of diesel fuel.

Very few of the trucks I have inspected have needed

The tre replaced, one that did was a tow truck

That the company ha replaced on their own

Incorrectly

I think I'll get mine inspected at a nearby dealer this week. A broken tie rod while pulling a heavy fifthwheel at highway speed would ruin my entire day.

I called and talked with the service manager of a Dodge dealership in a farm community south of Lubbock yesterday. I had heard he has an excellent woman diesel tech. He confirmed the rumors about the woman Cummins tech and says he has a good front end tech who can perform the recall inspection.

They also had to send it out to get realigned it took a couple of days.

Mine was done today. They had to replace the tie rod. The service manager said they inspect for cracks but the mechanic said it is a measurement of how far the tie rod end is rotated over if I understood the explanation correctly. Max is 5 degrees. Mine was 15. They installed it and alligned the front end. Took 3 1/2 hours.

They measure the angle of both right and left tie rods. If the difference between them is more then 5degs they change the left side tie rod. If the angle is more then 5degs I believe when turning to the right it puts a lot of torque/ stress on the left side tie rod, possible causing it to fracture. That is my understanding from the dodge mechanic that looked at mine last Saturday. He said the difference between mine was 2degs and everything looked fine. No change required.

Thought it took a lot longer than it should have, but they made up excuses. They blew my tire out pulling it in the shop. and they put a dent in my fender I think they were afraid to call and say your truck is ready with a fresh new dent.

Aren't you the lucky one

I don't think you would either, and you shouldn't. I had a few employees like that and I wouldn't let them near my trucks, much less anyone elses.
