Thoughts on a new truck for Camper slide in?

I need your help. Which shocks should I get?

I am looking to get a 30ft sail boat from Milford Conneticut to Sausilito California, just north of San Francisco. Boat is sitting on a double axle trailer, the mast sits on the side of the trailer. Boat and trailer is about 35ft. Mast sticks out forward and aft about 6ft on each end. Sits on trailer with keel on so it is a somewhat of a tall load, less than 14ft. Boat weighs 4klbs with about 1klbs of trailer. Boat is 10ft wide. Please let me know if any one is interested.

towing will be fairly straightforward, however the permits needed for the oversize load will cost plenty.

ironbutt, to sail a Mumm30 either around the horn or through the canal would be a miserable trip. granted sail the boat down the coast then to the carriabbbean then through the canal then up central america then up mexico then to california on a 30' race boat. NO THANKYOU. If you want to do a trip like that on a 30 footer race boat knock yourself out.

Moe, what do you reckon permits would cost for this? It is a light load but odd size. I may end up doing this myself for the client. However I thought I would check here(TDR) to see if any one is interested in doing this trip? Transport is not really my deal but I can do it. Is $3. 50 a mile about the going rate these days?

Do you have authority and commercial insurance? Anything over 102" wide requires overdemension permits and even certain cities you will be going through may require them. then, alot of places don't let you move during certain hours. This haul will be a major PITA for whomever takes it.

No I do not have commercial insurance, thats why I asking here. From what I understand if the vessel documentation where to be in my name I would not need the commercial insurance? I do understand that I would still need the wideload permits. What do you think a rough cost would be for a commercial transport to take this?

Thanks

Cost to move

This is relative. You said under 14 feet tall. In some states anything over 13' 6 inches requires a special permit which carries limitations that must be observed. Height and width measurements must be accurate and calculated into the final cost. 35 feet should travel in any state legally without a permit.

The 6 foot overhang will also need to be checked and dealt with. on a state by state basis.

in washington state over 8' needs a permit and 10' i believe needs a chase car with flashing yellow lights to anounce wide load. it also restricted what hours it can be on road. other states might have these laws too. robert

boat move

I operate a pilot car business out of California and have traveled in Eastern states. There will be hidden costs when optaining permits for your trip, I suggest that you call a permit co. they will arrange all the necessary permits

in all states needed to cross the country. I work closley with The Permit Co located in Pasadena Ca there Number is 800 223 7431. they work in all states.

Some of the problems are detours around construction sites if the load is to wide or high, this would require pilot escorts if the detour requires it . might not be a problem for you. I am signed on with a transporter of R V's and I combined piloting and rv moving. worked out good until the rv industry went in the tank. good luck. Stormy

I assume the boat is somewhat valuable? If not it may not be worth the expense to move it legally across country. If it is valuable and if it were mine I would search for a boat transport company recommended by the boat industry with authority, insurance, experience, and a provable track record.

It is not hard to find a hungry or ambitious guy with a truck and a ball hitch who may be willing to move it but this move is heavy with risk for someone who may be honest and well-intentioned but unaware of the requirements and risks.

We have transported much larger yachts across the country using a driver that operates under Landstar. This smaller boat sits on its own trailer so no need for the full size semi. Possibly put the whole package on a lowboy. I wanted to check here for some one with commercial permits that may be interested in this. The owner is considering flying out there buying an old cheap truck and driving the thing back himself. I am advising against this. Driving crosscountry towing in a cheap old unproven truck doesnt seem like a good idea to me. From what I understand if he were to do this he would not need the commercial permits, it is his boat. But he would still need the various load permits.

I just checked what a 24' Bison horse trailer would cost to ship to California, wt. 8000 #, 8' wide. $1. 30 a mile from Fletcher, N. C. Would run me about $3300 plus change, 2552 miles.

You could do well to contact a commercial hauler like Joule. (for example) I know they like getting light loads for return trips. . maybe a West Coast based hauler that doesnt want to go back empty.

Any local Yacht dealers near you that sell West Coast mf'd boats? Cabo, Navigator come to mind, but it wouldnt take me long to find others.

Good Luck--

Thanks guys for all the responses and info. The owner is planning on flying out and buying a 96 Powerstroke dully auto for 5k$ that has just completed a TX to CT towing a fishing boat. His thought is that he'll be able resell for 4k$. Joule Yacht Transport has done a good job. Birdman is always the first choice for the larger boats.

Thanks TDR
