I need some help on a few pointers on what the main items that the inspectors look for when they are looking the trucks over. I have it mainly done except for getting the new bed on and front bumper and headlights but am getting all of that tomorrow and hope to have it ready to be inspected soon. I just want to know if they really get picky about any certain things or if it is more of just a good lookover and you are good to go deal. I appreciate any advice for how to get this truck back on the road. Thanks Dan

Receipt fort materials

The most important thing Ohio looks for is serial numbers on the repair parts. You must have a receipt with the serial number of the truck from which the part was taken if it was a used part. The salvage yard needs to get this number for you. These serial numbers are stamped on any major body part and the DOT boys are looking for stolen parts. They will ask for a list of all parts replaced and can impound the truck and remove any part that does not match.

Also ask them if you need an appointment to have them look at it . I had to wait two weeks to get in. These fellas were not very friendly. Don't know your location ,just used OH as an example.

Thanks Daveshoe. I have all my receipts and vin#'s from the used parts I bought. I am also wondering what else do they look for as far as the vehicles conditionis concerned. I figure they look at whether all the lights work properly and all safety equipment is in place and working properly. Should it have mufflers? are they very concerned with body appearance and how well doors and hood work? I just need to know so that I don't have to do this twice. Thanks for any more info. Dan

P. S. Daveshoe I am in southern ohio so any info you have will be a great big help.

You have the right idea about the basic stuff they are looking for. They will certainly be looking for mufflers and cat converter if the truck came with one. Like I said before,it is a long wait once you get an appointment before you can take your truck in. If you miss it, you will be sent back to the end of the line.

BTW, once your truck is in salvage purgatory, you are not allowed to drive it PERIOD. If you take it somewhere, it must be on a trailer. you are allowed to make one trip in it under it's own power and that is to the inspection. You are to make this trip with NO license plates on the vehicle. I have no idea what happens if you fail the inspection with the thing, I guess you would have to get a trailer to get it home.

Can you imagine having to go through this crap with a cream puff of a car that only sustained light [but expensive] damage? First the insurance company screws you, then the state treats you like a criminal.

I know that the Ohio State Patrol Does get picky on a few mechanical things, some are very minor items too. They like to check anything related to steering, so make sure your track bar is in good shape. Have your airbag stuff in working order. They definately check the horn and will usually check the parking brake too.

I have helped some friends get salvage titled vehicles back on the road and these seem to be the areas that are dwelled on heavily.
