Does anyone know if the ratios on the 2003 5-speeds are the same as the 2002 and older trucks? I don't know if they've been exactly the same from day one or if they've changed over the years.

I currently have the 6-speed and like it a lot, it shifts great. I've had a 5-speed too but the only dislike was the large 3-4 spacing. As I recall it was easier/quicker to shift.

Not that I'm planning to get a new truck but *IF* I did, I would seriously consider a 5-speed. Saves about $900, weighs 150lbs less, shifts faster :)

Vaughn,

I have the 5 speed in the new truck. It shifts the same as my friends truck,"99". The gearing is a bit different, I have 3. 73's and he has 3. 56's. I hauled my 25 foot gooseneck tonight for the first time and I loved it. Wow this truck is cool. Makes the '01 feel like an old clunker but really fast. The '01' is to the point of mere stupidity, I love it... ... ... ... Greg

Greg. . a little off topic

"I have 3. 73's. "... how do you like the 3. 73 ratio... how long have you had the changed ratio installed. . any +/- info you might give us... . I'm thinking that the 3. 73 is the perfect ratio for a mountain Dually. . juzz a little pricey to do two diff's.

Well according to Fritz' website the ratios are exactly same, so no change there. Oh well. When I graph it with Excel though it doesn't look like there is a huge RPM drop between 3rd and 4th that I remember on my '98. 5.

Guess I'll have to test-drive one.

Willyslover,

The 3. 73 are in the '03'. I like them alot. @70 mph towing the trailer, 2000 rpm's... ..... nice. Still lots of power but not working real hard. It is hard to tell the difference with the 4. 10's in the '01'. It is way too bombed to even tell. That truck is just Silly!

I like my 5-speed. I drove the HO w/6-speed and, although it was fast (the HO), there was way too much shifting involved. Even with the 5-speed, I don't use 1st gear unless I'm in a ditch or towing my trailer up hill. I don't see a different drop between third and fourth compared to the other gears. They all seem to change by about 1000 rpms. At least, that's the average I use for downshifting. I don't downshift if the tach is over 2500. I do like the fact that, in traffic, I can put the truck in 1st, 2nd or 3rd and idle along.
