What is Common Rail Injection?

A friend has a powerstroke, I think its a 2001, and has had to replace several injectors because it has to have high pressure oil or something like that to fire. He told me to just wait, because Dodge has the same injector. Is this correct? I hope not, because I know of several people that have had injector problems on their Fords. This same friend just had the turbo replaced on his truck, (180,000 miles) I could list a lot of problems he has had, but the injectors, I'd like to know about.

the older 7. 3 liter psd have the heui cat designed injectors. the heui is hydraulic electrical unit injectors. they use the high oil pressure to actuate the plunger in the injector. the new 6. 0 psd is high pressure common rail like the new isbe, but i am pretty sure the injectors are different between the 2 models [psd & isbe]

EB,

The HPCR cummins that is in the 3G rams is not a HUI system that f**d uses. F**d engines use oil pressure to fire their injectors. Cummins however, uses an piezo-electric firing mechanism in their injectors that are made by Bosch. So not, you do not have to worry about encountering this type of problem with the new system. :D There are more knowledgeable on the TDR that will be able to link you to more informative site and provide you with more information than I have understood at this time.

Nick,

The 6L PSD is not an HPCR system. It is HEUI-injected, but is slightly different from the system in the 7. 3L. Peak oil pressure is now 4,200 PSI (3,300 on the 7. 3), the injectors operate on 42V instead of 115V, and the injectors are no longer made by Caterpillar. They are now a dual-coil Siemens, allowing greater control of each injection event. Also, fuel supply pressure is up from 60 psi to 90-100 psi.

EB,

I'll make this as simple as I can... HEUI injectors are big, heavy, and have a LOT going on inside them. They use high pressure oil to multiply fuel pressure so it can be injected into the cylinder. Usually, the injection pressure is seven times that of the high pressure oil... For example, 3,000 psi oil pressure would equate to 21,000 psi injection pressure. Make sense? The electrical coil on a HEUI injector opens a valve allowing the high pressure oil into the injector. Think of it this way, in a HEUI system, each injector is its own "injection pump. " Thats why they are so expensive--about $300-$700 each. If you want to know more, just let me know. I've worked on a lot of Cat and IHC (PSD) inection systems. :D

i could have swore that the new 6. 0 pos was a hpcr engine. oh well. it is the way of the future [along with the hydraulically actuated valves:D] too bad navistar didn't go that route.
