I noticed something that struck me as odd on our last trip with the 5th wheel. We were driving the Sierra's in So Cal where there is a lot of grades with the toybox on the back and a GCWR of almost 19k.

It seems that nothing I've found on an interstate highway will force the Cummins below about 2000 rpm's in 3rd even with this load. On some grades that equated to almost 60 mph, and on others we were down to 50 mph. Same load, same trip, different grades just a few miles apart. The grades were within 1% of each other as well and winds were not an issue that day.

What would explain this ? During the trip I was thinking that it could be the TC locked vs. unlocked, but I know that it should be locked at that speed. So does this mean that the TC was slipping more at 50 than it was at 60 ? The trans temp guage did not show any different temps between the 2 grades.

I don't think that with just an EZ the transmission should be toast with only 15k on the truck... at least I'm hoping not

If the TC was locked then it was slipping when you were going 50 more than when you were going 60 (if it was slipping at all at 60). If the TC was unlocked then this is how it works and nothing to worry about.

I hope it was unlocked.
