I will be in San Antonio, TX arriving late on AUG16 and departing early on AUG19 for a conference. I really only have a couple of evenings there, but thought I would get an opinion from the locals about what to see and places to eat.

Any advice from any members would be appreciated.

San Antonio

We spent 5 weeks there including the first of the year. The main attraction of San Antonio to us was the 'River Walk' including the Alamo. You could easily spend the 2 full days you have available there. Spend the 8 or 10 bucks on the boat tour in the canals, and you will see the whole River Walk area to get an idea where you want to walk to.

If you are inclined to drive, New Braunfels, out to the NE has a big waterpark and the town of Gruene is a quaint touristy trap, but has terrific food at the Gristmill Restaurant. .

Great area in the winter time, but you are likely to need your A/C now, I suspect...

(obviously not a local, but we liked it)

The Alamo Cafe, on 281 is my favorite. The tortillas are made as you watch and with chili con queso are wonderful.

Great Tex Mex food.

as a local, I would definitely stay away from that place. there are other places, much better, called Chuy's, Los Barrios, and also Salsalitos. Far better quality food. . I think you will be much happier, not to say Alamo is bad, but I would have to say I know better places. If you are downtown, there is Mi Tierra. That place is also great, and known for its killer food! If you have any questions, PM me, or call me at 210-387-4475, and I would be glad to maybe meet up with y'all!

Definately gotta eat at Mi Teirra's. It is in the Market Area downtown.

Have a drink at the Teddy Rosavelt Bar at the Menger (It is where TR recruited many of his rough riders. Robert E Lee was staying there when he wrote his resignation letter to the US Army). Next door to the Alamo. .

See the Alamo.

If you drive to New Braunfels, drive up River Road along the Guadalupe River. It is off of Loop 337. Come back around Hwy 306 and visit Gruene.

My 2 cents worth...

Shelby... Looking forward to possibly meeting you when you get down here! It's always nice to meet new TDR members from out of town when they pass through the area! Talk to ya soon!

Chris,

That would be great to get together. I get in late Monday night, and will be tied up staffing a booth at the convention center from 1215-1830 Tuesday and from 1000-1700 on Wednesday, and I depart early Thursday morning. That leaves either Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I will be staying at the La Quinta at 1001 East Commerce Street. My cell phone is 541-350-8002.

Maybe we can check out one of those restaurants you recommended??
