JURY STILL OUT W/6spd-HO

Gooseneck hitch mounting

I know this doesn't have much to do with the Cummins, but can I use my Direct TV satallite system in my new TT when I go camping? I know I'll need a stand and all that. Do any of you have this set up and can give me some words of advice oh all knowing Dodge Rammers???

Thanks a bunch.

Jesse

Jesse,
I have Direct TV at home, so I bought another dish to keep in the 5er so that when we go camping, I just take the reciever out of the house with us. Been doing it for over 5 years now and no problems. Made my own stand out of a 4' piece of 2" well pipe and an old x-mas tree stand painted wrought-iron black, (couldn't see spending the big bucks for one of them fancy tri-pods) #ad
I had thought about getting one of those signal finders, but most of the time, somebody has got a dish set up that gives ya the general direction and then I just use the signal strength meter on the reciever to tune it in.
Of course you can find the signal with a compass and zip code, but I've never done it. Too technical for me!

Jesse,

I have a travel trailer that I intend to do the same thing with. I bought it (used) with a digital dish on top, but no receiver. There are some considerations to using your home receiver elsewhere.

The main one that I know of is that your receiver is hooked to a telephone line. My understanding is that this is strictly for the pay-per-view movies and sports, but there may be more to it than that. I do know that the receiver occasionally dials the Direct TV data line (an 800 number) to report usage. (Maybe Direct TV is monitoring more than movies, for all I know. ) When the receiver places this call, Direct TV's home office gets the caller ID. If the phone number is not the one that you gave Direct TV when you set up service, they get upset. The way they figure it, you have taken your receiver to someone else's house (who doesn't pay for Direct TV service) and are letting them use it.

I am told that you can go for a week or two without having your receiver hooked to a phone line, but after a time Direct TV will do something with your service. This might be shutting you off from pay-per-view access, or it might even be shutting off your service entirely. I don't know.

If you discuss this with a Direct TV sales person, you might get a better understanding of their system, and be able to see how to use it without problems.

I hope it works, because I will be doing it myself on our next trip.

Loren,

I dunno about that one. When I first got my dish I was working on a contract in Santa Clara and had my TT in Morgan Hill. We can't seem to convince them that we are not there anymore (has to do with network channel selection). For four days a week my receiver is in my TT in Sacramento and the other three it is in Eureka in my home. I always connect the phone line. Last year I was off for three months and it was at home. So far, no static from them about moving it around, but I would like to convince them that I can't get a couple of networks locally. I'm stuck with the one I couldn't get up the canyon in Morgan Hill, which is the only one I can get by antenna where I live. #ad

Loren,
Calling the satallite company would be the best way to get the correct answers. But, for what it's worth, mine hasn't been plugged into a phone line since I moved it upstairs 3 years ago. (Too lazy to squeeze behind the entertainment center) However, I know that a lot of rules have changed since we have had ours.

Hi gang, had my dish in my trailer for over 3 years- no problems- the phone line is for pay per view mostly- I've traveled the us with it the only draw back is it is set to your home time zone and your local sports (fox) affiliate and networks (if you have that option)-- been great didn't miss to many giants games- Also check if you can't let local networks at home dish network is offering regional network feeds for rv'ers with proof of rv ownership--- hope this helps

I think that if you tell DirecTV that your system is in an RV, they will continue the service as long as you keep paying the bill, buy you will not be able to get pay per view.

I to have been using my Direct TV receiver from the house (one of two) and a portable, rack/stand mounted dish. I do the compass/area code method of locating the bird and with practise, have been hitting it first try. The phone line thing is a nothing. I live in an area where no off-the-air broadcasts are available, so I get east and west coast feeds for the major networks. This is great for me while traveling, as I get to see O'Reilly twice! #ad
I run my unit off a 300 watt inverter in the camper when I am in an area where quiet is required or late in the night, otherwise, I use a Honda EU1000 genset... 58 db... . if I'm not plugged into the electric grid. I even take the setup on my pontoon boat to Lake Powell so we can keep up with the news when star- watching gets old. #ad

You do not have to be hooked up to a phone line to get pay-per-view movies. Your receiver will store 25 events(movies) and then you just hook up to a phone line, call Direct TV and have them do a down-load to clear your receiver and you're good for another 25 movies. Down side is you would have all 25 movies on one bill but you can do the down-load with any number up to 25.
Phil

The phone line is for Pay-Per-View and for making changes to your authorized service. You can watch movies when you travel. The receiver stores the charges ( up to your authorized limit ) and will call them in the next time a phone line is detected. I don't use pay per view ever and I haven't requested any changes to my service, so mine hasn't seen a phone wire in several years. It is still working fine.

This is all good news to me. I was somewhat misled, but it's good to hear that I can take my receiver along in the trailer with no worries about service. We've had DirectTV for about a year and a half and haven't watched a pay-per-view event yet. At this rate, I can go ten years or so before I have to hook up to a phone line.

Thanks for the info.

Loren

Loren, I need to throw in my $0. 02 on this. I had my 2nd receiver in my trailer for a while, and everything was fine. . for a while.

The telephone connection is used for more than just reporting which PPV movies you have seen. DTV will from time-to-time put a signal down from the satelite that if the receiver doesn't call back afterward, they shut off your service. This happened to me. So I called them back and asked what the heck was going on. I was told when I initially got their service that as long as ONE receiver was hooked up, that the other didn't need to be. WRONG. Then I asked "what about all the people that have receivers in their RV?" They said they could set me up with what they call an RV account. Guess what: It costs the same as a whole new service; not the $5 extra for an additional receiver on your main account.

My only solution is to leave it in the house hooked up to a phone line, then unplug it and re-install in the TT when needed-and hope they don't put that funky signal down the dish when I'm in Mexico. Hope this helps.

I think it makes a difference if your subscribed to Local Channels or not. They check if your out of area through the phone line.

I did call DirectTV, and the guy gave me some info about having a second receiver in the house, and having it hooked up for reasons that escape me now...

Anyway, I'm going to get the $79. 00 dual LNB unit from radio shack to keep a box in the room, and have the other in the living room, that is until I need to take a trip in the t/t...

Thanks for all the help folks.

I knew you all were a great source of information.

Jesse.

WE use DISH network sattelite TV - have NEVER had ours hooked up to the phone lines - NO problem! We now have been given a second, portable dish to use on our system when RVing, I don't expect any problems since the friend who gave me the second dish (he got a new different type) has been using his DISH network setup with his RV for years without telephone connection, OR the slightest problem...

I've been with DirecTV for about 8yrs. When I wanted a second setup for my rv, I called them and they changed my account somehow to allow for two separate dishes in different states for an additional $5 a month. I chugged along fine until I moved to KY, when one day I reported some kind of trouble. Next thing I new neither receiver would work (except for the programming info). I called them back and they told me to go to the power co. for service! I'm addicted to O'reilly also so I was pi$$ed bigtime, and I let the poor defenseless rep on the phone have it. Long story short, I looked into going with Dish network, but the sighting-in process seemed complicated. I backslid and re-upped with direct through Pegasus.

Something to do with a court ruling. ANYWAY, sorry about the long post. They've gone up $2 on my service, but that's another story..... Henry

The only thing that they use the Phone line for is for pay-per-view and to check that your reciever is still in your house (and for those new ones, you can order stuff strait from your TV). If you have only one reciever and tell them that you don't have a phone, there's nothing they can do about it. I have three recievers and don't have my primary reciever hooked to a phone line and have my other two hooked up. No problems yet.

I don't know what it would cost, however, I've heard that they have omni-directional antennas out know for Trailers and even vehicles. They maintain their signal even if they vehicle they are mounted on are moving/turning. It's only an antenna, so I would think that DTv would support this. :)
