Satelite Internet service

For those of you who have real experience with satelite internet service, how 'bout some pro's / con's, recommendations or warnings.

My job will permit "working remotely" and I'm seriously considering doing the remote thing from the TT but have to have high speed access.

Probably the biggest downside is that the dish for 2way satellite needs to be set up by a pro. Aside from the setup signal only being accessable by an installer, the FCC says you can't do it yourself. Not really handy if you're traveling.



And if you're used to land-based high speed, the latency from the satellite will drive you nuts. Click-wait-wait-wait-results. This can make synchronizing via a VPN a pain sometimes, since the delay during busy times can make the VPN time out.



I'd only get satellite internet if there are no other options.

sadly GPRS seems like the best alternative.

you better check with your IT department and make sure you can do this. our VPN (Virtual Private Networking) software cannot support the satelite feeds. too much latency and cant stay logged in to the network. also most will not provide you a static IP address which is the most robust.



I work from home as well but use a wireless service from the Farm Service in town (2 miles). I have a mesh antenna on the roof that points to their highest grain tower. this service is not portable however. unless i traveled somewhere that had a tower and the same provider (DTN Speed).

There is an "RVSateliteInternet" forum over on Yahoo. Those folks discuss this subject daily. Many have internet satelite and set up their own dishes regularly. The rules are changing fairly regularly and rapidly.



I do not know about VPN however.



Go over to Yahoo and join their forum, I think the internet satelite RV days are just about here. I've been watching this for several years.

If "remote" means parked at an established RV campground, many are setting up WiFi hot spots where you can connect wirelessly, not sure on the connection, but I do know its way better than dialup. I have wireless at my house too where I work. Like said above, it's not mobile unless I can see the tower. 2mb up and down (on a good day) and my tower is about 5 miles away. :-laf

Satellite is a huge improvement over dial-up accept for gaming or logging into any secure type of network. I can log into our Citrix server from home but the lag will drive you crazy, only a small improvement over a dial-up in that case. As stated some networks may not even support it. Uploads are slow, lag times are high. Download times are good once they get going. The cost of the system is high as well. Sounds like in your case unless you are downloading large files you would be better off saving mucho bucks and suffering through dial-up for now. The future has some great technology on the verge of hitting the market in the next couple of years, high speed wireless and over the power grid, but you will have to wait for it.

I used the one way from home for awhile, until DSL came down the street. The two way was a lot of $$$. And a lot more sensitive to signal lost on clowdy and rainy days. It's not as easy to be find the bird as TV is.

I forgot to note that Direcway also has a FAP policy which limits how many MB's per hour you can download.
