I've seen several ads about saving $ by buying in MT, now it makes sense. I think it's a great idea, and if I were in the market right now, I would consider it. It's legalized robbery what some states charge in registration and sales tax!

In Texas, the state will get its sales tax when you bring that Montana RV back in-state and try to get a title and plates for it.

If you can legally treat your motorhome as a 2nd home for IRS tax exemption, why worry about where you "live" in your 2nd home?

If I live in a home in Texas attached to a foundation and want a 2nd home in Montana, it sure would seem legal to me. If that 2nd home in Montana is vehicular, it just might be able to pass thru Texas.

We suffer the same rules in Arkansas too. Had a State Judge lose his job over licensing his motorhome in Oregon to evade paying Arkansas sales tax.

Oregon has no sales tax and a few years ago a search of the DMV records found over 200 class A coaches licenced to the same address in Portland... and over 300 very expensive cars licensed to another address in Portland... . One to a very successful RV dealer and the other to a very successful Car Dealer... . Both almost went to jail when the state of CA went after them for defrauding them of their due sales tax..... Now OR has a few new laws preventing this.....

I still own property in OR and house a vehicle or two there..... but am well aware of the rules being a WA resident.....

This is not worth the grief over if you ask me... .

If that Montana-tagged vehicle happened to be a 5th wheel and was passing through Texas hitched to a truck with Texas plates and driven by someone with a Texas driver's license, I could certainly envision a protracted, unpleasant conversation with a Texas highway patrolman along a road somewhere. :(

When I bought my cabover I filed as a second home every year while it was financed for the interest on the loan. The laws stated that it must have a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, whitch it does. Can not remember how many months of the year you had to occupy it. Between fishing trips, traveling and power outages on hot summer monsoon storms (thank you generator and AC) I figured was safe with the IRS.

Didnt read the article. But my dad has his motorhome titled in MT there is a laywer out there that will set up a business for you all you get is a po box and he takes care of everything else. But for the bus dad got and what the sales tax would have been he can pay this guy for 15 years and still come out ahead. Pay attention on the road to how many have MT plates you will be suprised.

I have heard of the Business set-up also. Great idea. Not only tax savings but NO annual registration fee on an RV and NO annual inspection. If I were getting a coach i'd go to Montana for sure.
