I have two sections of tree trunk, about 8 to 10 feet long and maybe 30 - 34 inches across. One is fairly straight grained the other has quite a few branches that came into it. I think the second one would have a very nice grain to it.

I am trying to figure out how to get them sawed up into planks, I could probably, with a lot of work, get them into the back of my truck to move them. One at at a time. I am thinking that a sawmill could easily do this. There are p[probably other solutions as well. I have tried using google to find a sawmill near me unsuccessfully.

Would anyone have any ideas? I live in norther New Jersey, about 15 miles south of the NY NJ border.

Many sawmills are very reluctant to saw logs brought in to them by homeowners, or to even touch a log from an urban area or from anything but interior timber (no field edges or fencelines).

The chances are just too high of their expensive blade hitting a nail, or piece of fencing, or other God-only-knows-what foreign object embedded and grown over. You would be amazed what has been found inside trees!

I'm not saying you will won't find a sawmill willing to cut your logs, I've had them done before, but don't be surprised if some mills refuse. They have no idea where that log came from.

Thank you both. SRath - I understand what you are saying. It makes sense

I see a reference to a portable sawmill in that list. That might solve a couple problems.

The saw mills in my area go over EVERY log with a metal detector BEFORE it goes on the saw table. Saw blade bands are just too expensive and a pain in the butt to replace.

You may want to go over the wood with a good metal detector first before you take them to the saw mill. Even then, many saw mills are very hesitant to cut a log near the stump up to fence height out of fear of hitting a piece of old fence wire or nails.

If you can ensure there is NO metal in the wood or guarantee to pay for a new blade band, you may be able to find someone local who owns their own personal mini saw mill such as a Wood Miser.

Some people own portable band saw mills that can be trailered behind pickup truck (Woodmizer). If you can find one of them they can come to you.
