Hi all, I have installed a 1998 Chevy 5. 7l Vortec motor in my Jeep CJ and need some info on what scanner to get to set the "timing". I know it is set by the computer, but it is necessary to set the camshaft to crank to 0 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees and a scanner must be used, so I was looking at buying a good used scanner for this. I was looking on eBay at the Snap On MT2500 scanner and there are many. I am ignorant to what cartridges, keys, etc. I need to make sure are included so I don't buy something that won't do what I need. Please give me some info or if someone has a scanner to sell let me know.

Thanks in advance, Scott

I don't think a scanner will be able to do it. You will need a computer to link up that allows you diagnose and program the ECM. A simple scanner will not allow you to do this, it is for reading the fault codes and maybe resetting them.
