Scanning Tool Choice

A search of this subject resulted in quite a few threads that may be outdated. I'm looking to add a scanner to my tool box. Obviously, I can just go buy one at AZ etc, but I don't know how to evaluate any of them. It seems that they all give you codes and therefore useful information.

I'm only into doing my own work on my own vehicles. I have a 1998.5 24 valve 3500, 2006 1500, and 2008 Caravan. I'm not looking to break the bank, but I want a quality tool for my purposes.

Ideas?

In you're shopping you will want a scanner that will give you sensor values real time at a minimum.A scanner that can run actuators would be a big plus

I ended up getting an Acton Plus. I does quite a bit, and I'm still playing with it.
