A friend of mine recently bought a 96 3500 that was bombed by the previous owner. The problem is he had no idea what was done to the truck(he had it done out of town) and no longer knows the name of the shop that did it. My friend just put a boost and EGT guage in the truck and the boost is pegging a 35PSI(bad mistake buying that low of a guage) and the EGT is running to the peg at 1600 degrees. What could have been done to this truck. It is very quick, although very slow on the low end(16. 95@96MPh) We love smashing the import racers on the weekend cruise. What can be done to this truck to lower the EGTs and keep perfmormance? Or is it possibe. He is running straight exhaust with a 3" dynomas bullet muffler with no Cat. Any info would be appreciated

I think the first thing to do is remove the AFC housing and check the torque plate. The AFC housing is on the top of the back of the pump and has an screw that requires an 8mm allen wrench to remove. It is attached to the pump with four screws. No telling what kind of screws are used in that one, but the left upper screw is a "tamper proof" screw that you need a small chisel to remove on a stock pump. If the plate is stock it will have two rivets. If it is not there should be a number. If there is NO plate, you need one ASAP. Don't drop anything in the pump or BIG trouble. The plate should be positioned so that the two screws that fasten it in place are in the center of the slots. Pushing the plate forward can give the symptoms you mention if it is a "HOT" plate. If it has a number get hold of TST and see what you can find out about it.

Please beware of 1600 degree EGTs! I'm just a beginner at this bombing stuff, but I've been warned to not exceed 1300 degrees; something about melting alum. pistons!! I also have a 96 3500 5 speed with TST # 11 plate (280 hp, 680 ft. lb. torque) moved forward . 010 and medium AFC spring. I also can exceed 1300 degrees if I push her hard. My current control is my right foot. My next move will probably be 4" exhaust. I also understand a 16 cm turbo housing is a big help. Basically we need to move more air through the engine with less back pressure.

I also need some help, I can't get the 8 mm plug out of my AFC housing. I'm getting a little more smoke than I want and I can't get to the star wheel! I've tried soaking that plug with liquid wrench and WD-40 but it won't come loose. Sence the AFC housing appears to be alum. , I'm chicken to put to much torque to it. Any ideas?

Might try removing the plug wen the engine is fully warmed up. It might be a little easier with everything warm. Good luck
