I had my turbo explode on me the other nite...

I was doing a burnout  (stupid!) and at about 3500 RPM, 10 sec into the burnout, ~30 psi, the turbo let go. POP, then a LOUD bark, then it just died :{ . I didn't try to start it again.

I pulled off the old turbo tonight, put on the new one, cleaned everything out real good, and tried to start 'er. Nothing. Nothing at all. It sounds strange when I crank it, like the starter is working real hard or it is cranking real fast  .

I checked the obvious, and tried again. Still nothing.

Any ideas?

Could my timing have slipped bad right then?

Truck Bio: 98, 2500, 5spd, 12v, 370's, HX35/40 (before & after), 0 plate, 4000 GSK w/ valvesprings, PDR cam installed a week earlier.

Thanks!!!!!

Matt

First off, the turbo grenading should not have killed the engine. It shjould ahve remained idling after you let off the throttle. The fact that it died indicates a problem beyond the turbo.

You say it sounds like it's turning over hard? Try rolling it over by hand either with a barring tool or with a rachet on one of the balancer bolts. It's possible you were short on oil pressure, if so the turbo is the first to go and gawling in the engine is second. Let's hope that's not the case.

I did bleed the inj. lines too, just to be sure. When I pump the primer on the LP, the overflow valve kinda squeeks. Could that be air in the sys? I have not tried to turn the engine by hand yet...

Thank you!!

Matt

They usually squeek when you're hand priming, I beleive it is just the fuel squeezing through the valve.

hydro locked?

Your engine might have hydro locked-which is too much liquid(fuel) for the piston to reach top dead center. With your fueling amount it is possible that when the turbo blew, the "fire" was put out. But till the engine came to a complete stop, it probably kept pumping fuel, filling the cylinders with fuel and no air. If this is the case you will need to pull all the injectors at the same time and crank the engine pushing out the excess fuel. Hydro locking can bend connecting rods or possibly other damage, so check things carefully. Hope this helps, Jordan

Sorry to hear about this Matt.

If it is indeed hydro locked, and has been sitting this long, I would change the oil once you get it running again. That excess fuel will slip past the rings and dilute the oil.
