Has anyone had any experience with Scheid Diesel Reman VP44 ? I have a 2000 3500 with the SO engine and a 6 speed. I am particularly interested in the Lightning VP44. It appears to be the same type of power gains as the II HRVP. I am also curious, do the HR pumps play well with the Edge EZ ? I would go with the II unit as they are about the same price but, Scheid is close to home. :)

Thanks, Ron

The HP VP-44 I had them put in my truck when mine failed runs great. Had the work done in Lafayette and the people there were great to deal with.

RSimmons,

For the benefit of the rest of us it would be great if you filled in your profile so what could see what truck you have and the current mods. For example, if I did not see a fuel pressure gauge in your profile that is the first thing I would recommend, even before replacing the VP.

Scheid builds a great pump, that is how they got where they are. The Lightning would be a great addition for power

An AirDog would also be my two cents for the lift pump department. Again, if you have a fp gauge and your lift pump provides an adequate supply of fuel TO THE PUMP then run it till it goes bad & then install an AirDog (pm me for dealer contact).

The edge EZ will be better than nothing but I would HIGHLY recommend Smarty. If you already have the EZ then use it. When ready for more go with Smarty (pm me for dealer contact).

Sounds like you are on your way to a much bigger grin while driving your truck!

Chris, What did they charge to do the install and how long did it take them ? I could maybe get it installed at the Effingham location. It is about 150 miles from home and would save the core charge and return. My truck occasionally throws a 1689 (if I remember correctly, long night) code (vp44 failed to communicate with the ECM) . I have cleaned all VP, ECM, and PCM connections to no avail. So far, it is very rare but am afraid to get too far from home. I really do not want a big tow or shop bill when on the road. This is a original VP with 128,000 on the clock so I figure it is time.

RSimmons,

Not sure about saving on the core charge. Typically rebuilders will not credit core charge until the old pump is disassembled to verify it is a usable core. If Scheid could do so the same day that would be great, otherwise you will be waiting a short period of time (day or two). I have waited 4 weeks for a core credit before, but not from Scheid.

I am having the same code"no communication between ecm and injection pump"after i had my lighting pump installed. and so far no one can tell me why. sometimes when i start it it goes to 1500 rpm for a second then drops to 900 and idles there. scheid says that is normal, i dont believe that. it cost me $400 at the dealer to have the vp changed.

Greg,

Had a buddy with the same code recently. Kept checking all kinds of stuff. Finally found the power connection for his TST box was loose. That fixed it.

Hmmm , thats interesting... . but, no power connected boxes on mine. I do have an Edge EZ but it only connects to the MAP and CAN Buss connectors. Also, it has been on there over a year with no issues. I am assuming it is probably an early warning that the VP board is failing or an ECM dying (not likely).

The truck did store the code once on the interstate on cruise (warm outside). It stumbled like a tiny miss then ran fine with the code stored.

Once, it set when cold starting. It ran about 450 RPM and surged (for lack of a better word) about every 20 seconds. It would actually pop in the exaust almost like a backfire with the surge. Continued even when revved to 2000 RPM. Once I cleared the code, it ran normal.

It has set the code two times when on fast idle warming up but, continued to run just fine.

Also, check the 140amp alternator fuse in the Power Distribution Center. One friend had the "no communication" code and the fuse appeared good and even tested good but when replaced the problem was corrected. I didn't do the work but I have wondered if the connection between the fuse and the mount was not making good connection. This fuse has two screws that hold it on, might want to take it off and clean everything real well.

Trent
