I have a Scotty 2 installed without the Cowl hole cut. I do have a TAG with the silencer ring still installed and want to know how loud the thing really is with the hole cut out?

On my 2000 it has gotten pretty loud. A buddy has a 2001 and his is not as loud as mine. Wife and daughter dont mind, but it can get a little bit much. Yes we both have the cowl hole too, and I have the TAG III.

If you don't have any silencing at all and just cut the hole, might as well just sit the turbo right next to you in the passenger seat ... ... ... ... ... yes, it's that loud, IMO.

Well I am thinking I may not do it. Once I do the large injectors and turbo upgrade it will more than likely just get worth esp since I don't know if I can use my TAG or ring with the new turbo. If you add sound deadening to the inside of the cowl does it help much?

You can pull the insulation back on the firewall ,drill the hole and connect the Scotty II up and go for a ride. If it gets too loud pull the Scotty back and put the flat of insulation over the hole. What you have done is put the Scotty in "hush" mode.

The sound of the turbo travels thru the outside air vent in the cowl right into the cab. Is it loud... . it can be, but it also depends on the owner. I just did the Scotty II on my wifes 2k with her PDR HX35/12cm turbo. The sound is much louder than my 97 with the same turbo. We will see what happens to the sound when the HT3B goes under the 35 :-laf :-laf :-laf .

I said all that to say this... you wont know until you cut the hole. Drive it for a couple of weeks and see. .

I have had the Scotty II with the cowl hole cut on two 97's now. With tag and silencer ring in place on the first truck, you hardly noticed the turbo whine. With this new (to me) truck the previous owner lost the silencer ring. However, I kept my TAG out my last truck and even with it and the cowl hole the noise isn't THAT BAD, but if you lay into the throttle the turbo WILL talk to you! :-laf Oo.

And remember, its just sheet metal. If you dont like it and want the hole gone, just cut some sheet metal, drill some small mounting holes and paint it to match the truck. Then roll back the insulation and its gone again.

So it cant hurt to try it, then you will know for sure.

I've had my scotty II with the cowl hole for 2 yrs, then itook out the silencer ring in my hx35/40 turbo. She talks abit when into a hard pull with the 5vr in tow, but nothing unbarable. Just pop in your favorite cd & crank it up.

Been listening to turbos whine for 30 yrs in a big rig, guess I'm getting imune or deaf. :-laf

the whine from a non-silencer ringed aftermarket B1 w/ Scotty II is:

a. Unbearable

b. Deafening

c. Annoying

d. Cause for arguments w/ the sig. other

e. The reason I got rid of my SII

f. All of the above

I drove w/ one for about a year and it's gone now... thank god! I make a 14 hour trip 4 times a year and do it non-stop (pickup never gets shut down). After 14 hours I could barely hear myself think, and for the next two days I was tone-deaf to high-pitched noises. Ya, it sounded cool (like a jet spooling up in your pax seat) but it got old FAST! Now I can hear myself think again, carry on a conversation with a passenger at less than yelling volume, and enjoy my drives.

I just switched to a different air intake system tonight and all I got to say is its great. Much much better than the scotty II. I have no doubt that I will not go back to the scotty II.

Dont get me wrong, the scotty is a great system, but not for everyone nor for every truck.

I lined the cowl and the first six inch of the vent to the cab with a stick on accoustial insulation designed for hoods. this took almost all the noise out. It seem to hold up to weather with mold growing. I only did as far as I could reach through the 4-1/2 inch hole. I am not sure where get the product in the USA as it was from a hood liner kit i purchase while living in Australia in 1999.

So to jump on this thread - What about guys who have gone away from the SII? Did you just cover up the hole? Or have you gone to another intake system ie. AFE Replacement Box? or the like.

Add on the other side, if you drilled out the cowl with lets say a BFE would have the same effect? Lower EGTs with higher noise ratio?

I am just thinking out loud here.
