Enjoying my HO 6spd but would like to purchase an Air filter/box combo. Does anyone have dyno data that compares the Scotty 3 vs the AFE Megacannon? Searched the forums but couldnt find any...

Dyno numbers?

First of all, this will be about the Ram Air 3 since I am the developer of this product. [With the help of Rod and his truck]

I have always had my doubts on how an air intake can increase HP on a dyno. We had the opportunity to see that there was one horsepower difference between the stock box and our RAM Air 3 on a dyno at a DTR rally in Virginia last weekend.

No surprise to me.

The Ram Air 3 is also an enclosed system that blocks most of the underhood engine heat from getting into it.

Here are some of the results folks are giving us...

Empty stock truck

- Improved mid range throttle response

- 50 rpm lower for the same speed.

- Faster EGT cooldown.

- cooler overall EGT's by 50F or greater.

- claims that it 'woke up' the truck compared to the stock box are very common.

Pulling a 34ft 5th wheel

- driving the same hill with A/C on or off they shaved of 8 seconds on their acceleration time! I was skeptical of this... four runs after my skepticism proved it was a true claim and another gentleman saw a similar result... 7 seconds quicker!

- Could not press the EGT past or even hit 1200 at WOT in 6th at 55-60 MPH and could not accelerate anymore and still kept the egt in check.

- Mileage improvement of 1-2 MPG is becoming a common result.

Rod and others that have done some power mods can chime in here on what the results are for them. So far this unit is giving more results then the Scotty Air II did for the 2nd gen trucks. :D

scott. do these filters filter the air as well as the stock filter? i am more concerned about engine damage than power, but would still like to take advantage. i remember all the fuss about the K @ N filters and how the didn't even do anything.

How they didn't even do anything is a real stretch. However, we had some issue with the quality of the K&N and switched to the aFe filters. I had several oil analysis' done on my truck witht eh aFe and never saw more then 4PPM of silicon [dirt], I did have a 6PPM with a stock panel filter.

Several folks have had this concern and so far with nearly 70,000 miles on the 2001 RAM and over 65,000 logged on the 98 when I had it, no readings out of whack or over 4PPM. Others have reported similar results and I have not heard of any high results with our systems the way it is sealed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Scott. What is the price of the Scotty 3 system for TDR Members? Does it come with the refresh kit? Does it come with a prefilter? Is there a return policy or satisfaction guarantee?

www.wildcatdiesel.com

Rod can help with ordering and the other stuff as I stay in the shop, blow up, break, test and design the products. We learned early on its best for me to stay in the shop and tend to the R&D.

Long story.

LOL

Scotty

I just talked to Rod and ordered a Ram Air III. He quoted a price of $220. 00 US. TDR discount is free shipping.

I saw on the AFE web site that their set up is $385. 00.

I'll be looking forward to getting the system and trying it out. It may be two or three weeks because of a back order situation.

Rod was a pleasant fellow to deal with.

My RAM Air III

I've got one on a stock set-up and I can testify the above posting is accurate about the claims. Though I hadn't dyno'd or have EGT guages yet, it seems to wake up in the mid-range and MPG increased slightly. I do keep getting the filter minder at 65% but it did that with the stock box as well.

That was my truck Scotty was referring to above. We did the dyno run stock first then installed the Ram Air III and ran it a couple of more times. No real change in HP on the dyno.

HP: 244. 1 Torque: 456. 5 ft lbs. at the rear wheels

Then the fun began. Took it for a test drive and :--) The throttle response was MUCH better and I can hear the turbo spool up. Not real loud to be a pain but loud enough to make it enjoyable. Mileage is up about 1 MPG or so. Oo. Oo. I was turning just over 2000 RPM at 70 MPH, now it's 1950 RPM at 70 MPH.

Don't have gages yet (hoping Scotty finishes his new pods soon), so I can't comment on EGTs yet.

Overall, I'm VERY pleased with my Ram Air III. :D :D

I don't understand it either. The truck just seems to be breathing easier and doesn't have to work as hard to do the same thing.

I can't explaine it, but it works. ;)

Sorry to say but that isn't possible. You see the torque converter is locked up so the gear ratio is always the same and will take the same RPM to go a certain MPH reguarless of how much HP you have. You seem to here this every now and then about a drop in RPM with mods. It is a figmit of your imagination I am afraid.
