OK, just installed the Scotty air intake and AFE filter on the Ram. Haven't had it out towing yet, and I will reserve final judgement until I do, but if that intake alone doesn't reduce my temps or give me better mileage in a HUGE way it's out of there. For one thing, it's not even fastened in place! I opened the box yesterday, and I'm expecting fasteners, or at least a couple of different things in there. No, it's just a big plastic sleeve and an aluminum ring. OK, maybe it reuses some factory fasteners or something. Nope! That's a damn expensive plastic sleeve I easily could've made from PVC. Sorry guys, I know it sounds *****y, but I don't trust something like that big-a$$ air filter to be held in place by tension on the turbo hose. Worse yet, I fear the tension will eventually work the hose off the turbo, leaving it susceptible to dust and grit. Strike one.

Strike two - that is the most annoying noise ever. I'd heard about the noise, figured OK, no big deal, I've already got a straight-pipe exhaust, and practically need earplugs to drive my Jeep. No way. That hissing is just annoying, and very, very loud inside the cabin to boot.

At this point I really would have rather saved my money. It's out of there unless I see massive gains.

Buyer beware, I suppose.

Darel, It does work dropping EGTs!!!! I have seen anywhere from 150-200 deg reduction from this housing. In fact I have it off right not because in this cold this winter I was getting too much cold air. I am running just an open filter right now, and I am seeing 75 deg hotter just cruising down the freeway empty.

I have had no problems with the housing being held in place bt the turbo hose.

Is your silencer ring out if so put it back in that will help you with the noise some.

Not using mine anymore but...

Darel,

I never had a problem with mine coming loose or moving around. Did you kit include the grommet for the firewall hole? That will snug it some if that's a problem. If no grommet then go to NAPA and get one for a 4" truck tailight.

I noticed others complain about the noise but I never had it?

Although the Scotty helped me a bit with EGT's, the BHAF did much more. JMHO

I didn't have any leftover pieces (i. e. silencer ring), where is it located so I can make sure a PO didn't remove it?

I also insulated the housing and tube, I'm hoping I see a little extra temp drop that someone posted (I think it was you, drawson) in my "insulating intake" thread.

150-200 deg might be enough to leave it in for me, or at least hang on to it and just swap it when trailering. Any difference in fuel mileage?

Darel

You did drill the 4. 5" hole through the firewall? That would be the source for the noise. Rather than leave a raw edge (even with paint) you use a grommet to cover the edge. That grips the plastic housing a bit too. I thought the grommet was included now, it did not used to be until someone thought it out.

If your familiar with truck lights, for certain applications they have throwaway 4" light/housings. The grommet holds the light in the hole in a truck body. Turned out to be just right for the Scotty.

I would not expect a noticable fuel mileage change, just the EGT drop although if you go back and read old Scotty threads, results can and do vary.

i was not pleased also

As far as the price and what you get is what i WAS NOT pleased about!

The set up does reduce EGT,s More if you run an auto trans and the under hood temps get hot!

my under hood temps dont get very hot , mabe due to the standard trans ? any way ALSO I have a bug shield on the hood and ther is NO. . I repeat NO!cowl induction, because of the bug shield!! I have tied a light string to the vent in the cowl and every where i drive the string flies up the windshield NOT down in the cowl . its not a long string either . No i wasnt pleased but i know others are happy with the product and god bless em but for the money i would rather have spent it on the new AFE mega cannon.

I just purchaced the afe set up for 199. 00 and there is MUCH more quality in the design and the ease and of installation. It may not ONLY use outside air BUT it flows alot better than the K/N re0880 stuck in that skinny tight restrictive black P. O. S. and MY egts are lower than the scotty set up !!!. mabe not yours but mine are!!

I've had mine on for 72,000 miles, and it hasn't worked loose yet, and probably won't. Hissing noise? Sounds like you got other problems. Perhaps a substantial boost leak. You should be hearing a nice whistle from the trubo with the PSA installed, NOT a hiss. May want to check those clamps. :--)

It's the later kits that don't include the rubber grommet, should I add one to seal it up? Would that help with the hiss? I'll check on the clamps today, but there's only 2 and they sure were tight when I put them back on. Maybe 'll replace them with new just to be safe; too bad they're a dealer item due to those slots and tabs that hold them in place.

Also, the instructions were terrible that came with the intake (can't even see the pictures) can someone please describe the orientation of the plastic housing as it sits in there, just so I can make sure I have that right?

The sound is basically like your HVAC fan is on high, and it varies with turbo speed. There's no whine or whistle like I expected from the turbo, just this whooshing/hissing that really does sound like a fan.

And yes, I did drill the 4. 5" hole.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks you don't get a whole lot for your money with this kit. I understand the filter itself is probably very expensive, but that's still an $80-$100 plastic sleeve we're talking about.

If it doesn't work, I'll just hang on to the filter and try to order the Mega Cannon setup and save some money there.

Thanks guys!

IMO, the BHAF is the best bang for the buck, and no dust issues past the filter.

Thanks, I did not want to be the one to say that again.

Darel, the grommet only dresses up the finish around the big hole and snugs the housing up. By making a more solid setup, perhaps it will amplify the sounds your hearing.

Noise

I too found the noise to be to loud. It was tolerable just barely. Then came the PDR HX36-16 super turbo. Could'nt take it any more, especially on long drives while towing:eek: I'm using the BHAF now and life is good:D

Part of the problem is the shape, nothing like a megaphone to funnel the turbo sounds into the cab.

The AFE system is of superior quality and a much better bang for the buck - IMHO. I could not justify spending the $$ for the psycotty system for what you get.

I love my AFE system, it looks great and sounds even better!
