Ok i have the scotty ram air 3 and was wondering if 1) has an upgrade come out and 2) how often should i be changing the filter? mine looks pretty dirty... Ive had it for about 4k miles but the truck had to sit for 1-1/2 month. .

ok... do i have to buy some kind of kit to do this... . I dont have one for afe... i have a k&n kit but im sure im going to get screamed at for even mentioning it?

Yeah, Geno's has the cleaning kits. I got mine through them and it seems to clean better than my k&n did on my 96. I cleaned mine after approx. 12,000 miles and it still wasn't to bad..... You can probably guess how much off-roading I do!:D :D

It can be REAL dirty and still allow a lot of air in. Last year hunting it was totally covered in fine dust, the pleats were almost filled in with the fine dust. Before the drive home I shook our the big clumps and looked inside the snorkel, it was as clean as could be.

I never noticed a power loss, after getting home I used the kit to clean it.

Cleaning Oils

Nick,

Look into the viscosity of the cleaning oils before you purchase. I have heard that the oil used on the AFE is thicker than the K & N.

Read a post that the K & N oil can blow back and coat the air flow sensor.

Nick, just keep an eye on your turbo inlet blades. If there is dirt or corrosion, than your K&N isn't doing it's job. I've had a K&N in the stock box for 118k miles and no problems yet on filtration, but I'd like something that would lower my EGTs. Been considering the scotty II. Do the 3's have you drilling the 4" dia. hole? If so, how much more noise?

Nick,

A filter with a guaze media is more efficient when dirty. Same with an oil filter. The guaze gets packed with dirt and the filter works better. You can go up to 25,000 miles without cleaning. I live in the desert and I clean mine every second oil change or 10,000 miles. I am currently working on a foam filter for our trucks and they will have to be cleaned every 5,000 miles. What ever you do don't blow or shake it off. The oil and dirt is what is filtering for you. If you remove either without re-oiling it you will suck dirt through the intake..... Greg

Nick while you are at it put a pre filter on the filter . Geno's has them. I use the AFE proguard 7 setup with the AFE airbox. The cleaner from your AFE should work on the Scotty.

rod at wildcat diesel (sells them) told me that the K&N oil cleaning kit that you can get at walmart works just fine - he should know?

TPCDrafting: the scotty 3 work on the 03s and newer - the scotty 2s work on the 02s and older. no drilling on the scotty 3s. i like my scotty 3 - i hope i can still use when i upgrade the turbo.
