Intake tube replacement

If your 04.5 cat fell off, would EGT be less?

I got this off EBay, a Scotty Ram Air III for 2003+ CTDs.

It came today and includes the big main body, a huge fliter element, the sensor manifold, a reducer ring and one more peice that I have no clue what it is or where it goes.

The first small problem is the EBay seller used the Scotty Ram Air III product pic which shows the flow minder installed. This housing doesn't have the small bulkhead for the flow minder. That's not a big deal because ABS plastic is easy to fabricate and epoxiing a small bulkhead to it would be simple. It is a bummer though that it was advertised as having one.

The second problem is the reducer ring falls onto the main body with absolutely no friction, unlike the sensor manifold connecting to the reducer ring, (that's tight). The PO obviously ran duct tape over the joint from reducer ring to main, there's evidence to that.

Last but not least, what the heck is this and where does it go?

As for the loose reducer ring to main body, is it supposed to be loose? If not I'm thinking more ABS plastic to shim the difference around the joint. Just wrapping say a 1/2" strip of thin ABS until I have a friction fit, then glueing it (ABS strip to main only) on the main.

I am aware that it probably doesn't matter since the joint is pre-filter.

I'm also assuming that weird kitty head shaped thingy is a mount for the main somewhere cause there seems to be no mounting hardware anywhere.

Thanks for any advice, Doug

Almost looks like it's a wire clamp for the sensor wire. Just guessing as I have no experience with the product. Hope you get it worked out!

It looks like the kitty head is a stand-off for the underside of the main, under the front inlet. The cone shaped side of it must fit onto something else.

I'll admit, I haven't looked under the hood too much on this rig and I'm really new to diesels, but a quick learn.

Oh and thanks, I'll get it figured out one way or the other.

That piece in the picture goes in the main housing at the front end. The narrow end of the filter element fits in the back side of the cone. The filter minder was useless on the main housing where it was put because it is on the wrong side of the filter. The manufacturer removed it because they realized the error of their ways. I have thought about drilling the sleeve that the factory rubber elbow connects to so I could use the filter minder but decided against that because I've never had a minder that worked well anyway.

I used captive nuts and small bolts (3) to secure the reducer to the main body, more elegant than duct tape. I also used small bolts to secure the kitty head to the inside of the housing. Bolting it together made for a more ridged unit.

Then I cut part of the main housing off that goes into the fender well so it would fit closer to the battery. I rerouted the positive battery cable over the top of it instead of underneath and rerouted the positive feeds to the disconnect solenoids to that the filter fit in place like it should. Lastly I tied the filter housing down with a nylon web strap to that it didn't flop around in the engine compartment.

I installed an AFE filter sock too.

I like mine after fixing it up a little bit.

Thanks Briman,

Now the kitty head makes total sense. I've got about 1K miles to go till my first (free) oil change, that gives me around two to three weeks to get this thing in solid shape for after the oil change (even though it's just a fresh air kit, I don't want the dealer tech to red flag me).

If I'm really proud of my ABS fab skills I'll post up a few pics.

BTW, I thought the flow meter was in a weird spot but just thought "what do I know?".

Thanks again, Doug
