Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) screw on Fuel Filter base

I bought a fuel filter base from NAPA for an aux. tank and now am having trouble deciding which way it's supposed flow. The stamping has a clear in and out but if you turn it around it's stamped for the other way. Anyway, does fuel from the aux tank go down the middle of the filter and out the holes on the side to my fuel tank, or the other way around?

The fuel goes into the filter through the small holes around the outside edge and clean fuel comes out through the center just like an oil filter.
