that engine is crammed up further under the cowl than our inline 6's... that alternator is like 10" away from the cowl. we have like double that ... that engine is not for the maintain it your self crowd. maybe with a 3" [or 6"] body lift, there would be room to work on it. .

I love popping the hood on my truck for other diesel owners, especially Ford owners. The first thing they do is drop their jaw when they realize how empty the engine compartment is.

If I was a ford mechanic (I would have plenty of job security) I would quit if I not only had to work on one of those 6. 0's but how about the thousands that would come back to the dealership! NO THANKS!

I used to work on a LOT of F*rd Econoline van chassis with the various generations of the 7. 3L... They weren't so bad... but that thing is in a pickup truck and looks impossible to work on.

Are pickup trucks going to have a 'doghouse' like vans anytime soon? Sheesh...

I'd rather eat manure and die than own one of those things.

Matt

When the problems first started popping up. Ford dealers got real good at pulling engines. It was easier to pull the cab than anything else. The cost of a head gasket repair would break the bank.

I bet lifting the cab off the frame is a pleasure on an Excursion...

That's plumb stupid, man... to take the engine out... they lift the cab.

Matt

Some friends of mine with a big company just bought an airport van (econoline chassis) with a 6. 0. The dash is so deep even the doghouse yields limited access. The back of the alternator on that unit in about 4" from the cowl. It's rediculous.

:-laf Been there, done that. The fan shroud is molded as one piece from the factory with little bosses built in about 1/2 way down.

The procedure (yes, truth) is to cut the fan shroud in 1/2 at the bosses to gain access, remove/replace the belt, fan, whatever you happen to need to get at, then bolt/screw the fan shroud back together using a bolt/screw/nut kit made by/for Ford especially for the job. Forgot the part # off hand, but a Ford parts department would know it by "6 liter fan shroud bolt kit. "

Funny, but true. :)

That would be FUN out on the road somewhere!

The same is true of the V10 trucks. We had a 450 at school (Dump box) that the exhaust studs busted off in the heads. Talk about an absolute freakin' nightmare!

I'd hate to foot the bill on some of the repairs on them things. It says that if 2 more head bolts are loosened, head gasket and all bolts must be replaced. And To change glow plugs, you have to remove the rail more the whole bank. It's a good thing there are so many diehard Ford guys out there, more Cummins available for the smart people.

Those are all Gas Rigs

What a mess... ... ... ... . these guys are about to put a Cummins in aren't they???? Only dreaming... ...

That's just sad.

droF has a history of this nonsense going back into the 80's. The engine in that little POS droF EXP had to come out from underneath.

I think the EXP was built to directly compete with the mighty Yugo. :-laf
